Visit Oslo ran the opposite of a tourism ad. Halfdan, a deadpan local, complains that the city is too small, too easy, too accessible.
Every complaint is a selling point in disguise. No crowds. Easy to explore. Authentic.
The results: over 20 million views on X, a 26% surge in international arrivals the next quarter, and the number one ad worldwide per AdForum, on a modest budget.
Melange Verdict: do not copy the sarcasm. Norwegian irony does not travel cleanly to an aspirational Indian audience. Copy the mechanism. Find your destination's perceived weakness, "too far," "too quiet," "too offbeat," and reframe it as the reason to come.
