For ~WomensHistoryMonth, we’re celebrating our amazing colleagues who challenge self-limiting fears and inspire others to ~BreakTheLoop.
Caroline Steadman, Broadcast Technology R&D, Star Sports – “Leaving behind the English countryside, I came to London at 15. Alongside attending university, I also worked as an apprentice engineer at a night club for seven years and eventually became the head engineer. Sound engineering, back then, was a male-dominated field. It was a physical job that involved a lot of heavy lifting – speakers, amplifier racks, etc. So, I'd be lifting and tipping things, even though I did not have the body frame needed for it. It led me to have arthritis in my early 20s.
Being a single mother, I remember taking my daughter to work. She would be hidden in the sling with her little ear defenders on, having her milk while I mixed the bands. Sadly, I had to leave the festival job and I was heartbroken. That's when my best friend brought me to India. Now I have a challenging and fantastic job in Star Sports Broadcast Tech R&D and I’m a proud, independent single mother. The richness of being a career woman adds to my daughter's life – she loves me coming home and telling her all about virtual reality. I hope she carries that stubbornness through to forge her own happy, successful path, regardless of what others may think.”
