Gandhi - The Musical
The musical begins with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi arriving as a legal representative to a muslim Indian trader in South Africa. This musical is a reminder of the voice within Mahatma Gandhi, that never stopped him from standing up against the inequality and injustice that was meted out to Indians, eventually becoming the precursor of the freedom struggle.
The well orchestrated and seamless rolling-in of the sets, the exemplary rhythm of the spot lights and their magical dims; helping in the transition of the scenes, the ghostly smoke representing the high-handed British Monarchy, the symbolic presentation of the scenes by the dancers, the songs and the music; bringing out the essence of different moods of the scenes in perfection, exhibited the technical strength of the musical.
Chirag Vora's performance as Mahatma Gandhi was flawless. He lived and died as the Mahatma himself. Casting Boman Irani as the distant commanding voice of the British Empire was perfect.
Director Danesh R Khambata has touched upon almost all the important aspects of Mahatma Gandhi's personal and public life. From his self-doubts about the struggle post his wife's demise, his strained relationship with his son Harilal, his Dandi march, launching of the Quit India movement to being a witness to the perilious partition post Independence.
A perfect way to celebrate the spirit of our Independence day.
Thank you # for having me on the opening night of the musical.
