‘Ranbir Kaleka’ Artist Catalogue of Works, 2012. Our very first book project at Kahani was also the start of a love affair with publication design. As much as we enjoy the arts ourselves, it’s a joyous learning experience to make a deep dive into an artist’s body of work. The journey of discovering , looking at his video works and immersing ourselves in the story was stimulating and rewarding. He’s still one of our favourite artists and we never miss a chance to see his works.
With gratitude to for trusting us with this book.
Beautifully printed and hard case bound with the title finished in silver foil by our partners

Reflecting on 8 years of amazing work, valuable lessons and little moments of joy. We’re sharing our stories from our journey at Kahani. Have a question? Inspired? Or just curious about what we do? Leave us a comment or DM to know more.

As Kahani completes another year, we find ourselves deep in reflection. When some measure of our present crisis is past, when we are back at the studio, how will our practice respond to a landscape that has changed forever? What does it mean to communicate, to design, to make, to create? How can we live, work and grow in ways that are sustainable, mindful and compassionate? Can we even prepare for what lies ahead? Or is this the future we have been preparing for all along?

#7. Exchange freely
For too long creative people have held back their best ideas, their deepest convictions and the benefit of their experience for fear of being mistaken or copied or taken advantage of. We have to learn to share and to work as a community supporting one another more openly. Our work is important and there are difficult problems to solve in the years ahead. But they cannot be solved alone. It will take a collective will to transform design itself into an agent of change. We can only do this by recognising, celebrating and complementing each other’s potential.

#8. Express honestly
At Kahani we have endeavoured to support people and organisations that dare to call truth to power. The truth is often uncomfortable but it must be told. How can we create inclusive dialogues? How can we bring more people to bring their unguarded, honest selves to the conversation? How can we design situations of open communication?
As Kahani completes another year, we find ourselves deep in reflection. When some measure of our present crisis is past, when we are back at the studio, how will our practice respond to a landscape that has changed forever? What does it mean to communicate, to design, to make, to create? How can we live, work and grow in ways that are sustainable, mindful and compassionate? Can we even prepare for what lies ahead? #9. Enable kindness
Perhaps the world has always been a cruel place. Perhaps we are only just realising it, faced with the onslaught of media pitching side against side, people against people, capital against life. As communicators, we have a choice in the messages we amplify, in the stories we tell and in the storytellers we support. At Kahani we have always asked ourselves if the work we do supports a better world; if it gives voice to the unheard; if our work brings people together in joy. Today, we promise to double down on this task at hand. There is no greater mandate for us than to enable kindness towards others, towards the planet and most inwardly towards ourselves. What you give, you receive. This closes the infinite loop of the universe.

#6. Encourage exploration
The journey brings challenges to every traveller and the story lies in her response to the known and the unknown. The mountain will be climbed, the desert will be crossed. At the frontier, a new place will be discovered. We are looking for the signs that will guide us in new directions. We welcome new possibilities.
Change is the only constant. All life must grow, adapt and evolve to survive and then eventually, to thrive.

#4. Eliminate excess
Wastefulness is not an option. We must optimise our energy, our resources and our materials to make the most of what is available to us locally and within reason. We must do more with less. We must use less to say more. The balance of need and want has always been a fine line for responsible designers to manage, but our commitment to efficiency has never been more crucial.
#3.Endorse beauty
Humanity cannot live without the pleasure that beauty brings. Locked down, stressed out, quarantined and confined, people everywhere have sought solace and community in music, craft, theatre, film, dance and art. We cannot afford to abandon the beautiful at the altar of the trendy minimalist or oppressively conservative in the name of ‘aesthetics’. Exuberance, joy, delight - these are the experiences to strive for and to live for. Join us in this quest for joy.
#1.Embrace ambiguity
The future is dead. Long live the future! Nothing in this year or the next will be as we thought it would be, but design thrives in ambiguity. As designers we have honed our skills to make connections between the improbable and unlikely, looking for new ways of framing a problem instead of simply answering a brief. We must embrace the fact that there will be no clear paths ahead. Intuition and ingenuity will become our most valuable guides.

#2.Expect new paradigms
Deep down, sometimes secretly, sometimes openly, we knew that the old ways were failing our people and our planet. We cannot hope for any kind of normal without a radical shift in perspectives and actions. We may (in some weeks, months or years) find ourselves in a post-Covid world, but what about the other crises at our doorstep? The real, the virtual and the imagined paradigms of life and work are shifting quicker that we ever thought possible.
