Try adding one of your own out-of-stock products to your cart. If it goes in, the rule you switched on is not running.

A store kept selling products it did not have. The setting that prevents that was on, and had been the whole time.

The products were not being tracked for inventory. On most platforms that one switch makes the out-of-stock rule meaningless. If nothing counts the stock, nothing can decide it has run out, so the rule is never consulted at all.

Two settings, both apparently correct, that only work when they agree. Nobody is told when they disagree.

The cost lands on the customer who buys something that never ships, and on whoever answers the phone afterwards.

A green tick in a dashboard is not evidence that something is working. It is evidence that something believes it is working.

A site had an object cache installed and configured. The plugin's own connection test reported success. Pages were still slow.

The cache pointed at an address the server could never reach. The test was reporting that it had successfully done nothing.

This is the worst category of problem, because every dashboard says the work is done. Somebody installed it. Somebody ticked it off. For months the site paid the full database cost of every page while a green tick said otherwise.

Ask for your cache's actual hit rate rather than its connection status. A hit rate near zero means the database is still doing all the work.

Most of what we find on a maintenance handover is exactly this: things installed correctly that have never once done their job.

An ads account with 22 conversion actions and zero conversions recorded. Not a tracking gap. Nothing at all, for months, while it kept spending.

The tag on the website belonged to a different ads account.

Somebody had installed a tracking snippet at some point, probably from an older account or another agency, and nobody had compared the ID on the page to the ID the account expected. Both looked correct alone. The account showed a tag. The site had a tag. They were not the same tag.

Everything downstream was guesswork. Bidding had no signal to optimise toward, so the budget was spent essentially at random.

View source on your site, search for AW-, and check that number against the one in your Google Ads account. They should match. Often they do not.

A site hosted in India, selling to Indian customers, loading badly for all of them. The server was fine.

It was running through a CDN on a free plan. Free plans do not include Indian edge locations. Every request from a customer in Mumbai travelled to Singapore and back before the page began to render.

A service bought to make the site faster was making it four and a half times slower, because the plan did not cover the country the customers were in. The tool was not broken. It was doing exactly what a free plan does.

Run your homepage through any speed test with the location set to an Indian city rather than the default. If first-byte time is over a second on a site hosted here, your visitors are going the long way round.

Open your own shopping ad and your product page side by side. If the two prices disagree, that is where your budget is going.

A store's shopping ads were being shown and getting almost no clicks. The products were competitive. The images were good. Nothing was disapproved.

The price in the feed was higher than the price on the page.

That mismatch does not throw an error. Google does not reject it. Merchant Center reports the account as healthy, because from its side nothing is broken. What happens instead is quieter: every shopper comparing prices sees the higher number, and the store loses the comparison before anyone clicks.

Nobody goes looking for a fault that never announces itself, which is why this one ran for as long as it did.

Any tool that hands you a five-figure problem count is asking you to buy something. Verify ten before you believe it.

A plugin reported 36,110 issues on a site. We checked them individually instead of believing the dashboard.

10,600 were pages that had already been fixed, deleted or redirected months earlier. The audit table had never been rebuilt, so it was describing a site that no longer existed. Roughly one problem in three was a ghost.

This goes beyond one plugin. A big number in a report is not evidence of a big problem. It is often evidence of a stale cache, a broken crawl, or a tool with a reason to alarm you.

Pick ten of your own reported issues at random and open the URLs yourself. Five minutes tells you whether the number is real.

Checking whether the number is real before charging anyone to fix it is most of what a site audit actually is.

If your store is slow and nobody can tell you why, the answer is sometimes sitting in a table nobody has ever opened.

Good hosting, light theme, small catalogue, and every uncached page still took seconds.

The sessions table was 329 MB.

That table exists so a shopper's cart survives while they browse. It should be small. We checked what was actually in it: 99.99% of the rows belonged to crawlers that had hit an add-to-cart link. Every bot that touched it got a session. None of them ever bought anything. None were ever cleaned up.

The site was carrying a third of a gigabyte of robot shopping carts on every page load.

Ask whoever maintains your site for the size of your sessions table. Above a few megabytes is worth a conversation.

Ranking third and getting no clicks is not a title problem. Check the search results on your phone before you rewrite anything.

A page sat at position three for its main term and received zero clicks across a full quarter. Not a low rate. Zero.

The standard advice at that point is to rewrite the title and meta description. That advice would have wasted a week.

We looked at the actual results page on a phone. Above position three sat an AI summary, a map pack and four ads. By the time you reached the third result you had scrolled past a full screen of other answers. The ranking was real. The visibility was not.

Position is not traffic. It never was, and it is less so every year.

Search your own main term on your phone, in a private window, and count how far down your result actually sits. Most people are surprised.

If your store has ever changed platform, your old product links are probably still being clicked right now.

A store moved two years ago. The old URLs were never redirected, so they started returning 404. Nobody noticed, because the traffic graph looked flat. New pages were picking up. The line stayed roughly where it had always been.

We pulled the numbers. 675 dead URLs were still earning 67% of every search click the store received. Google had not stopped sending people. The store had stopped catching them. Two-thirds of its search traffic was arriving at an error page and leaving.

That never appears as a drop on any graph. It appears as growth that does not arrive.

Open Search Console, sort your pages by clicks, and check how many of the top ones still load. That number is the one worth knowing.

Somebody is describing your business to strangers right now, using details you changed months ago.

For an online store that somebody is Google, and the details come from your product feed. We keep finding feeds quoting a price the shop stopped charging, because the plugin sends the regular price and never the sale price.

It throws no error. A price that is too high is still a valid price. You simply lose every comparison, quietly, to shops more expensive than yours.
