"We were a 25-member team and we didn't tell anyone what we were doing. In fact, I had told my crew members that we were shooting a Dil Chahta Hai kind of film about three friends. Barring the lead actors and a few others, nobody knew the real story."

To the Scissorhands of -- Nitesh Bhatia!

"Nitesh sent me a very intelligent letter when he finished reading the script for the first time. The articulate way in which he argued back and forth, defending and attacking each character got me excited; he truly understood the challenge ahead of us in editing this film.

His nuanced and deft handling of tone and the attention he has paid to the emotional details have brought so many of our scenes to life. In particular, I remember editing this one scene, mostly silent, where Sahil comforts Jai after Jai has received a distressing phone call. The scene wasn't working for me and in my frustration, I kept asking him to make it shorter just so we could skate past it.

Nitesh asked me for some alone time so he could play with it. When I came back an hour later, he had tripled its length, miraculously bringing all the drama, all the tension back into the moment.

Thank you Nitesh for your patience and your care; you've treated these characters as your own. Nothing more a filmmaker can ask for, partner!"

Some production designer !

To the sorceress of Art Direction -- Sweta Gupta!

"It was quite late when Sweta walked into the office for our first meeting.

I remember noticing how petite and soft-spoken she was -- hardly the person I'd expect to manage construction and supervise painting crews. As we discussed the script and talked about these characters and what we wanted to say with their spaces, I remember her mostly listening, just taking it in. I remember worrying about whether any of this was even making sense to her.

And then I saw her presentations and the force with which she pitched her ideas. And I saw the vigor with which she later executed on them, building miracles on pennies and never missing a deadline.

The hotel room where Jai and Sahil stay in Mahabaleshwar is my favorite set in the film. That green she picked for the walls, those tall, sheer curtains; she managed to make it look cheap and sublime, romantic and practical all at once.

Thank you Sweta Gupta for your love for -- we all really appreciated it."

Our Camera Queen -- Sherri Kauk!

"I remember calling Sherri in LA at some 5 in the morning, Mumbai time to tell her I had a script I wanted her to read. She was my first call but I didn't think it was practical; she wasn't just going to fly down and shoot a movie in India! And then she did.

It was challenging and humbling and eye-opening to watch her deal with the challenges of working in the Indian summer with that jet lag and a crew whose language she did not speak and with such meagre resources.

The film looks so personal, so intimate and spare; we always talked about making the audience feel like they are right there in the room with these characters and that's what she gave us.

Thank you Sherri -- wouldn't be the film it is without your images ❤️🙏🏽"
