Ashok Khemka : The IAS Officer Who Walked the Straight Path into Retirement
Senior IAS officer Ashok Khemka, a name synonymous with bureaucratic integrity and a record-shattering 57 transfers, retired on April 30, 2025, after a distinguished 33-year career. The 1991-batch Haryana cadre officer superannuated as Additional Chief Secretary in the Transport Department.
Khemka's career was defined by an unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, most famously in 2012 when he cancelled the mutation of a high-profile land deal in Gurugram involving Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, Robert Vadra, and DLF. This decision catapulted him into the national spotlight but also intensified a pattern of frequent transfers, averaging one every six months, often to what were perceived as "low-profile" departments like archives and archaeology.
Born in Kolkata and holding academic credentials from IIT Kharagpur and TIFR, Khemka voiced his frustrations over being sidelined with poignant reflections. After his 55th transfer, he famously wrote "archived again" on social media, and upon being passed over for a central posting, he commented, "Straight trees are always cut first. No regrets." Despite the professional costs, he remained defiant, once offering to lead the state's vigilance department to wage a "real war against corruption".
As he steps into retirement, Khemka apologized for any friction caused during his service but showed no remorse for his principles, stating he plans to continue his fight for justice as a lawyer. His career leaves behind a complex legacy of a lone officer who refused to bend in a system that often penalizes honesty.
