Letβs talk about a question that sounds very basic in an interview:
βWhat is the difference between "async" and "await" in C #?β
Iβve seen people explain this with a lot of complicated definitions.
π "async" tells us that a method can perform asynchronous work.
π "await" tells the code to wait for that operation to complete without blocking the thread.
For example, when we call a database or an external API, we donβt want the application thread to sit there doing nothing while waiting for the response.
public async Task GetUserData()
{
var result = await GetDataFromApiAsync();
return result;
}
The important part is not just knowing the syntax.
As a developer, you should understand where and why to use it.
Β«β"async" is used to define an asynchronous method, and "await" is used to asynchronously wait for a task to complete without blocking the current thread.βΒ»
π‘ One common follow-up:
βDoes "async/await" create a new thread?β
π Not necessarily. Thatβs where the interviewer may go deeper. π
