Retaliatory action against those who took part in the Cockroach Janata Party protest must stop immediately: National Green Party
The National Green Party views with grave concern the reports that the central government is taking retaliatory action against those who took part in the protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party in Delhi — action reportedly linked both to their participation in the protest and to their role in the key developments said to have led to Union Minister Dharma Pradhan's resignation. The National Green Party has demanded that the central government order a judicial inquiry, supervised by the Supreme Court, into the brutal police violence against the young people who took part in the protest.
Reports are emerging that landlords in Delhi are being pressured to evict protest activists who live in rented accommodation, and are being instructed not to house anyone who took part in the protest. It is also learned that over the past two months, several people have had to change their place of residence as a result of such pressure.
Peaceful protest and freedom of expression are fundamental rights of democracy. Retaliatory action by the state against individuals who took part in the protest runs counter to democratic values and to the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
The understandings reached between the government and the protest representatives in connection with the agitation must be honored in good faith. Threatening protesters, pressuring them to vacate their homes, filing cases against them, or taking other forms of retaliatory action — in violation of those understandings — is not in keeping with a democratic system.
In this context, the National Green Party demands that the central government immediately end all retaliatory action against protest activists, fully implement the understandings reached with the government, and urgently withdraw or suspend all cases and retaliatory measures connected with the protest.
The National Green Party reminds that protecting the right to peaceful protest in a democracy, and respecting freedom of expression and civil rights, is the constitutional responsibility of every government.
