At least two conversations I've had recently made me realise how many new entrepreneurs are confused about buying a domain vs hosting.
One founder bought a domain for multiple years (.com + .in variants) and thought that was enough for him to have a website. I ended up building the website on my own hosting space temporarily for this client, but that's not a sustainable solution.
Another guy asked me: "Why do I need hosting if I already bought the domain?"
Here's the simplest way to understand it:
šŖŖ Your Domain = Your business' name (like "XYZ Pvt Ltd" or "M/s ABC" or "UVW LLP")
š¬ Your Hosting = The physical store or warehouse where you operate your business. You can register a business name, but without a physical location, you can't actually run the business, right?
The same goes for websites (online businesses) as well:
ā¶ļø Domain: Your website's name (www.yourbusiness.com)
ā¶ļø Hosting: The server space where your website's files actually live
Both are essential. One without the other is useless.
š” Pro tip for new entrepreneurs: Please don't overspend on multiple domain variants or several years of domain/hosting service you don't need yet. Start with one domain (.com is usually enough) and invest in a good quality hosting service from day one.
Do not fall for the offers that domain or hosting service providers offer. Their offers are useful once you've already validated your business idea.
As a startup, your main goal is to validate your go-to-market idea as early as possible. If the idea is not gonna pass the validation phase of a startup, you would have wasted the cost of purchasing a domain or hosting service for several years, which would be throwing money into the river.
If in doubt, you have AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc. to clarify your doubts.
