J&K POLICE IN SHOPIAN ARRESTED DRUG PEDDLER; 280 GRAMS OF CHARAS LIKE SUBSTANCE RECOVERED

August 23: Continuing its sustained efforts to eradicate the menace of drug abuse from society, Shopian Police arrested a drug peddler and contraband substances like charas was recovered from his possession.

During routine naka checking at Mastpora crossing a police party from Police Station Keller noticed a person moving under suspicious circumstances and tactfully apprehended him. During his personal search, approximately 280 Grams Charas like substance was recovered from his possession. The accused has been identified as Junaid Ahmad Khanday son of Gh Ahmad Khanday resident of Keller. Accordingly, FIR No. 87/2026 under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Keller and investigation has been taken up to establish forward and backward linkages and dismantle the larger drug network involved.

Shopian Police remains firmly committed to its mission of creating a drug-free society and appeals to the general public to extend their cooperation by sharing any information related to drug peddling or substance abuse in their localities. Citizens can report such activities to the nearest police station. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.

J&K POLICE IN SHOPIAN SEIZED 07 VEHICLES; 03FIRs REGISTERED

August 17: Continuing its sustained crackdown on illegal mining, Shopian Police seized six tractors and one tipper in the unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals from different areas of the district and registered three FIRs in the respective police stations.

During routine patrolling, a police party from Police Station Shopian seized a tractor & Tipper found engaged in illegal extraction and transportation of minerals without mandatory permission. In this regard, FIR No. 163/2026 under relevant provisions of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.

In a similar action, a police party from Police Station Heerpora intercepted and seized a two tractors carrying mining material without valid royalty documents. FIR No.80/2026 under relevant sections of law has been registered and further investigation is underway.

In another action, a police party from Police Station Imamsahib intercepted and seized three tractors found involved in illegal mining activities without the mandatory permissions. FIR No.54/2026 under relevant provisions of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.

Shopian Police reiterated its firm commitment to protecting the district’s natural resources and taking strict legal action against individuals involved in illegal mining activities. The general public has been urged to cooperate with the police and report any such unlawful activities. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.

Tiranga Rally Held in Shopian Ahead of Independence Day

Shopian, August 12: A grand Tiranga Rally was organised in Shopian as part of the celebrations for Independence Day 2026, with enthusiastic participation from officials, students, youth and citizens.

The rally commenced from Sports Stadium Sindoo Shirmal and proceeded towards New Aglar Mandi, with participants carrying the Tricolour and raising patriotic slogans along the route.

The event was organised under the supervision of MLA Shopian, Deputy Commissioner Shopian and SSP Shopian, along with the heads and representatives of various government departments.

The Tiranga Yatra aimed to promote patriotism, national unity and the spirit of participation among citizens as the district prepares to celebrate the 80th Independence Day.

The colourful procession witnessed a strong display of national pride, with the Tricolour prominently carried by participants throughout the rally.

Apple Growers in Moterbugh Suffer Crores in Losses After Strong Winds, Heavy Rainfall

Shopian, Aug 6: Apple growers in Moterbugh, Shopian, have suffered losses worth crores after strong winds and heavy rainfall damaged orchards, causing a large number of apples to fall before harvest.

The unexpected weather has dealt a major blow to farmers, many of whom depend entirely on apple cultivation for their livelihood. Orchard owners say the damage is extensive and has raised serious concerns about this season's production.

DM Shopian Issues 60-Day Order Mandating CCTV Surveillance Across Public, Commercial Establishments

Shopian, Aug 03: District Magistrate (DM) Shopian has issued a 60-day order making the installation, operation and maintenance of CCTV surveillance systems mandatory across a wide range of public, commercial, financial and institutional establishments to enhance public safety and strengthen crime prevention measures.

Issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the order directs all notified establishments to install and make operational CCTV surveillance systems within 15 days from the date of issuance. The order will remain in force for 60 days, unless withdrawn, modified or extended earlier.

The directive covers banks, financial institutions, ATMs, jewellery shops, petrol pumps, shopping complexes, retail stores, hotels, guest houses, restaurants, educational institutions, hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, religious places, cinema halls, sports facilities, transport hubs, government offices, warehouses and other notified establishments.

According to the order, CCTV cameras must cover all entry and exit points, reception and waiting areas, cash counters, customer interaction zones, corridors, staircases, common areas, parking spaces, vehicle entry points and storage areas, wherever applicable. The systems must record clear, high-quality footage with date and time stamps, supported by uninterrupted power backup and adequate night vision where required.

The order further mandates that CCTV footage be preserved for a minimum of 30 days and produced before the police or other competent authorities whenever lawfully required.

Responsibility for installing, operating and maintaining the surveillance systems has been placed on the owners, occupiers and heads of the respective establishments. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Shopian has been tasked with ensuring compliance through periodic inspections by Station House Officers (SHOs).

The administration has warned that failure to comply with the order will invite prosecution and penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, in addition to any other action permissible under law.
