The movie Shershaah is a worthy commemoration of Captain Vikram Batra. As the nation recalls his sacrifice, we would like to apprise of another Kargil War-Hero, Captain Jintu Gogoi.
Originally hailing from Khumtai, a small urban area in the Golaghat district of Assam, Captain Jintu Gogoi was commissioned into 17 Garhwal of the Garhwal Rifles. He was recalled to join his unit when the Kargil War broke out in 1999. He had to join his unit which was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir just 12 days after his engagement. On the night of 29th June, he and his troops recieved an order to secure the Kala Pathar area near the LOC of Batalik Region. As soon as Capt. Gogoi and his team climbed atop the Jubar Top, the enemy machine guns started roaring. In a brave fight, Capt. Gogoi gunned down two enemy soldiers. However, the troop led by Capt. Gogoi was surrounded by enemy forces. He was asked to surrender but he charged at the enemy with the regimental warcry - "Badri Vishal Laal Ki Jai". He received a full burst from a machine gun in his solar plexus and yet he choose to fight till the last breath.
The blood he bled did not go in vain. The battalion launched subsequent attacks and took Kalapahar from the hands of enemy. Captain Jintu Gogoi was only 29 when he made the supreme sacrifice. For his heroism, the 29 year old soldier was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra on 15th August, 1999.
"If you happen to visit Guwahati Railway Station, notice a board on the right hand side of the entrance in platform 1 - you will find the names of the 18 gallantry award winners from Assam and you will see my beta's photo first in the list." Says Thogiram Gogoi, father of Captain Jintu Gogoi. His tales of valor will outlive generations!
"It is truer to say that martyrs create more faith than faith creates martyrs." - Miguel de Unamouno.
