Kulgam, June 14 : In a shocking incident of vandalism, unidentified miscreants allegedly cut down around 500 high-density apple plants in Hatipora area of Behibagh in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, causing losses estimated at more than ₹25 lakh.

Official sources said that the affected orchard belonged to a local grower who had invested heavily in establishing the high-density apple plantation, considered a modern and high-yield horticulture practice aimed at boosting fruit production in the district.

The incident came to light after the orchard owner discovered that a large number of apple plants had been deliberately damaged and uprooted by unknown persons. The act has triggered anger and concern among local residents and the horticulture community, who termed it a serious blow to the livelihood of the orchard owner.

Police have taken cognizance of the matter and initiated an investigation. Officials said that an FIR No. 30/2026 has been registered at Police Station Behibagh under relevant sections of law to identify and bring the culprits to justice.

Meanwhile, locals have urged the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and provide necessary assistance to the affected orchard owner, who has suffered substantial financial losses due to the destruction of the plantation.

Srinagar, June 14: Former Baramulla District Development Council (DDC) Chairperson Safina Baig is likely to join the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), with sources saying that discussions between her and the party leadership have progressed in recent weeks.

Sources familiar with the development told KNS that Baig, a prominent political figure in north Kashmir, has held multiple meetings with senior NC leaders and is expected to formally join the party in the coming days.

Baig, a lawyer by profession and former chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Haj Committee, has remained politically active in north Kashmir and enjoys influence in several areas of Baramulla district.

She had won the Baramulla DDC election as an independent candidate and later served as the council's chairperson.

In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, she contested as an independent candidate from the Wagoora-Kreeri constituency.

When contacted, Baig told news agencies a decision would be taken soon.

Her possible entry into NC is being viewed as politically significant, given her presence in north Kashmir and her independent political base in the region.

Baig is the wife of veteran politician Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, and a former deputy chief minister, who has played a key role in Jammu and Kashmir politics over the past two decades.
