The Nedumangad police have arrested 31-year-old Ashkar and his partner Akhila. The tragic incident came to light on May 29, 2026, when Ashkar rushed the unresponsive toddler to a private hospital in Panavoor, falsely claiming the child had choked on rice during lunch. Arshid was subsequently shifted to the SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where doctors officially declared him dead on arrival.Extensive Physical Trauma: The preliminary autopsy report confirmed that the child was beaten to death, suffering severe internal bleeding and broken ribs caused by being kicked heavily in the chest.Dozens of Injuries: Medical examinations revealed between 51 to 91 distinct injuries spanning across the toddler's body.Sustained Abuse: The injuries were of varying ages, indicating a history of prolonged torture. They included severe internal bleeding, older fracture scars, and cigarette burns. The Perpetrators: Ashkar and the child’s mother, 24-year-old Akhila, were living together in a rented house in Karikkuzhy, Panavoor. The child's biological father, Akhil, had previously passed away by suicide.Mother's Complicity: Akhila admitted to knowing about the repeated assaults. Investigators found that she witnessed Ashkar brutally abuse her son multiple times but actively stayed silent and failed to intervene or notify relatives.Evidence Destruction: The police uncovered a deliberate plot by the accused to cover up the crime. The interiors of the house were thoroughly washed to erase bloodstains, and the child's clothes, along with several documents, were found burnt to ashes in the backyard. Legal Charges: Both accused individuals have been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. The Thiruvananthapuram Rural police are moving to invoke additional rigorous provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against them.During a police evidence collection drive at the rented house, intense public fury erupted as local residents breached the security cordon and physically assaulted Ashkar.Further investigations into Ashkar's past revealed a severe history of domestic violence. He had previously tortured his first wife, Amina, for dowry in 2022, leaving her critically injured and in a coma for nearly a year. The Kerala state government, represented by Minister for Women and Child Development Bindhu Krishna, has expressed a policy of zero tolerance and promised the swiftest, most stringent legal punishment for the perpetrators.
