How should you think about pricing?
For each new project, assess your costs of doing business, your value to that particular project’s objective, and then factor in your expertise.
Calculate Expenditure
Your monthly expenses (rent, gear, software, etc) divided by the average amount of jobs you do monthly. That number is your overhead per gig.
You can also just divide that monthly number by 30 to get your daily overhead and work with that figure.
VALUE
Determine how much a client stands to earn directly/indirectly from the project you're working on, and then how important your service is to the success of that project. Work backwards from there to put a number on your value to the project.
EXPERTISE
This one’s a little more art than science, but for the sake of trying to quantify, give yourself a score of 1-5 based on your:
- experience
- network
- efficiency
- skill
- collaborative process
- communication
This one you’ll have to feel out, there will of course be outliers who could score themselves 50… this is just to get you thinking.
More often than not, when you add it all up, you’ll realize you’ve been charging far too little!
