School Leaders, Here's One Number You Should Check Today.
Many schools proudly mention,
"We have over 10,000 followers on Instagram."
That's impressive.
But here's a more important question...
How many people are actually engaging with your content?
If your school has thousands of followers, yet your posts receive only a handful of likes and almost no comments, it may be time to pause and ask why.
This isn't about blame.
Over the years, many schools have worked with different agencies, run various campaigns, or focused on growing follower numbers because that was considered a measure of success. In the process, follower count often became the goal, while audience quality was overlooked.
The result?
An account that looks popular at first glance but struggles to reach the very parents it hopes to influence.
Admissions don't grow because a page has 10,000 followers.
Admissions grow when the right parents consistently see, trust and engage with your school's story.
A school with 1,500 genuine local parents following its journey is often in a much stronger position than a school with 15,000 followers who rarely interact.
As a school leader, don't just ask:
"How many followers do we have?"
Also ask:
What is the average engagement on our posts?
Are our followers parents from our target locations?
Are people saving, sharing and commenting on our content?
Is our social media creating genuine admission enquiries?
Digital presence should build credibility, not just numbers.
Because in education, trust is measured by meaningful connections—not vanity metrics.
Perhaps it's time every school conducted a simple Social Media Health
Check, not to judge the past, but to ensure the future is built on an audience that genuinely cares about the institution.
