The name "Assi" comes from the word for sword (Asi).

The Battle: Legend has it that Goddess Durga, after a fierce battle with the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha, was so exhausted that she threw her sword away.

The River: The spot where her sword struck the earth gave birth to a stream, which became the Assi River.

The Confluence: Assi Ghat marks the exact point where this stream merges with the holy Ganga. Taking a dip here is said to be equivalent to visiting all other pilgrimage sites in the world combined.
