🌏🐑 The global wool industry returned to China. So did we, remotely. 📡💻
The 95th IWTO Congress, held this year in Dalang, Guangdong Province, once again brought together delegates from across the international wool industry.

Just as during the previous edition in China, Nickland Media supported the event's technical operations remotely from our headquarters in Biella, Italy, working alongside the local production team.
The venue reflected the scale of an international congress, featuring a large curved LED wall with two forward-positioned scenic LED wings, an extensive moving-light rig, a professional audio system, wireless microphones, and a production environment designed for impact and reliability.
Behind the scenes, advanced video processing managed signal routing, scaling and content distribution across multiple display surfaces, while the audio workflow seamlessly integrated room sound, simultaneous interpretation and streaming feeds.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was demonstrating how effectively complex technical operations can be managed remotely. Thanks to a robust network infrastructure and a flawless internet connection, we collaborated with the on-site team in real time, with virtually no latency despite the considerable amount of data being exchanged.

More than ten technicians formed the backbone of the local production in China, while Nickland Media focused on:
» remote testing and fine-tuning of production systems;
» real-time monitoring, troubleshooting and optimization of the live streaming delivery;
» recording and management of audio and video feeds for post-production and online authoring.

Beyond the technology itself, projects like this highlight how international event production is evolving. Remote collaboration is no longer a contingency solution—it has become a powerful operational model that makes specialized expertise available wherever it is needed, improving efficiency, reducing response times and environmental impact.

One aspect that never ceases to fascinate us is that engineering is universal; the way we engineer is cultural. While the technical knowledge remains fundamentally the same, every country approaches challenges, workflows and problem-solving differently. Reaching the same destination through different paths is one of the greatest values of international collaboration, allowing every project to become an opportunity not only to contribute our expertise, but also to broaden it.

A sincere thank you to everyone at IWTO, the local production team in China (Vicky Zhang, Nikki Wang, Yod), and all the professionals involved for another successful international collaboration. We are already looking forward to the next one.

🎥 Seven Consecutive Years at the Premio Biella Letteratura e Industria!
Some collaborations, year after year, become much more than just a professional assignment.

For the 25th edition of the Premio Biella Letteratura e Industria, Nickland Media once again handled the event’s video production, continuing a partnership that has now spanned seven consecutive editions.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of documenting meetings, authors, entrepreneurs, ideas, and discussions that have helped establish the award as a benchmark within Italy’s cultural landscape.
Each edition is different from the last, yet the satisfaction of contributing to an initiative that so effectively brings together business culture, literature, and local identity remains unchanged.

Our sincere thanks go to the organizers for the trust they continue to place in us, and to all the people who, both behind the scenes and on stage, make this important event possible.

On the technical side, the production featured a three-camera Canon Italia workflow, including a Canon CR-N300 robotic PTZ camera remotely operated through Bitfocus Companion and an Elgato Stream Deck Classic control surface.
All video sources were fed into a Blackmagic Design ATEM live production switcher, where they were combined with presentation content, lower-thirds and graphic overlays, while audio was sourced from a Midas mixing console. This setup provided a reliable and efficient live production environment, ensuring consistent visual and audio quality throughout the event.

On stage, precise and punctual as a metronome, was cultural journalist and founder of Scrittori a domicilio, Valentina Berengo.
Behind the scenes, video direction was handled by Nicolò Caneparo, who shared the technical booth with sound engineer Stefano Teagno and production assistant Massimo Ariatta, both from Number One - Servizi Tecnici per lo Spettacolo.
Last but certainly not least, special recognition goes to the event coordination led by Mariangela Gasparetto.

Six years. Same client. New challenges every time.
For the 6th consecutive year, Nickland Media delivered the video & multimedia production for the RAJA – Mondoffice Annual Convention.

This edition brought us back to two distinctive venues:

On the technical side:
📽️ At Città Studi Auditorium, we deployed an additional camera projection system (2x screens/projectors) alongside the main screen — enhancing immersion and visual continuity for the audience.
💡 Lighting was not just functional — it was part of the storytelling. A show-driven design supporting every key moment of the convention.

Large-scale productions are never about single performances. They’re about alignment, precision, and trust across every team involved.

CONI Winter Trophy 2025: a behind-the-scenes story ❄️

The Trofeo CONI Winter 2025 is a multidisciplinary sporting event organised by the Italian National Olympic Committee, dedicated to young athletes aged between 10 and 14. The competition brings together regional teams from across Italy.

Nickland Media was once again involved by the CONI Regional Committee of Valle d’Aosta for an event filled with energy, joy, and warmth, welcoming around 900 young athletes who gathered in Courmayeur (Valle d'Aosta), host venue of the 2025 edition.

Our role was that of on-location reporting, supporting the main announcer during the event’s opening ceremony. Our longtime friend and adventure companion, Paolo Mei, was the official event speaker at the Courmayeur MontBlanc Sport Center, whilst Nicolò Caneparo was broadcasting live from Jardin de l’Ange Square, in the heart of the alpine village.
We spent the entire morning refining the running order and the various live links, while in the early afternoon, we carried out a series of technical and practical connection tests directly from the selected locations. A meticulous and essential process, fundamental to ensuring a smooth and seamless flow of the presentation once the live broadcast began.
The fact that we work together very frequently in different contexts—essentially speaking the same “language”—helped us to be efficient and quick during the preparation phase, and perfectly in sync during the event itself.

Our first thanks therefore go to Paolo for the excellent collaboration, to CONI Comitato Regionale Valle d'Aosta for the trust they placed in us and to Monica Cantele who guided us through the challenges of the running order. We would also like to thank the production team—particularly Carola Rossi, Carlo Plazzotta, and Erika Dal Pozzo of Campus Fandango Club, as well as Marco Varchetta and his Nexting Company team for the television production. A special mention goes to Roy Tircoli ROY Produzioni, the technician who supported us in the square: his proactivity and rare skill set were truly appreciated.
Thanks also to the great availability and humility of Giuliano Razzoli, Marco Albarello, Mirko vuillermin, and Mara Zini: working closely alongside them was, as always, an inspiring and truly emotional experience.

IWTO 2025 – Maseru, Lesotho 🇱🇸
The world of wool in the Kingdom of the Mountains

Without a doubt, the experience of the Wool Round Table and the journey that followed along the rugged roads of Lesotho offered us countless moments of discovery. We were deeply impressed by many aspects of the world of wool growers and by wool itself—its origins, its culture, and its profound connection to the land.

First and foremost, the quality of Merino wool is truly extraordinary. Thanks to the unique environmental conditions, production reaches exceptionally high standards. A fibre that quite simply leaves one in awe.
We then had the opportunity to travel through several villages and to stop at a couple of sheep sheds. It was particularly fascinating to witness both the simplicity and the effectiveness of the entire shearing process—from sheep to bale. Lesotho’s total annual production is certainly not high in terms of volume; however, the true value of its wool lies in the quality of the fibre. The finest micronage range between 15 and 17 microns, while the overall production average stands between 18 and 20 microns. It was also interesting to discover, during our visit to one of the sheds in Semonkong, that wool growers are typically paid within two months, regardless of when their wool is actually sold.

The future of wool in Lesotho looks bright. While the communication, marketing, and commercial structures will need to continue evolving, the foundations are clearly strong. We were able to see firsthand the progress being made by the new generations, who are taking ownership of—and actively shaping—this growing market.

IWTO 2025 – Maseru, Lesotho 🇱🇸
The Wool Round Table from behind the scenes

We knew from the start that this would be a major technical challenge—one that pushes you to grow and learn—and we were right. With one fewer team member on site, new technologies to integrate (a NAS-based Media Pool and an LED wall with a venue-imposed ratio), and a linguistic and cultural gap that matters far more in technical workflows, the event demanded care.
It was IWTO’s first event in Lesotho: a few doubts beforehand, many certainties afterwards. Once again, Nickland Media handled all technical aspects—pre-event planning and on-site ex*****on—coordinating the Jam Session Sounds team led by Beat Bokang Khoarai. In the first days, we needed to understand the local team’s workflow and timing. The well-known African Tempo is real, but Beat’s tireless proactivity enabled solid results and even solutions to issues beyond our production.

A wired internet connection was essential but proved problematic; fortunately, a Starlink system solved it brilliantly—fast, stable, and reliable even in heavy rain.
We were also very pleased with the NAS-based media pool. Our Synology DS725+ with two 2TB SSDs in parity provided reliability, redundancy, and an efficient workflow, especially for last-minute presentation updates. The SSDs also allowed safe travel on rough roads.
We did face some reliability issues with equipment from the AV service, but we accepted it with a smile as part of the game.

A special thank-you goes to Ben Roberts, who supported us remotely with efficiency and responsiveness, and a broader thanks to the entire technical team and IWTO. It is always a pleasure and an honour to be part of such groups.

Finally, I’d like to close this long technical report with a more human note: for Amanda Millard, this was the last event she experienced in her role as event manager. Amanda wasn’t the person who first brought me into the team, but she was my co-pilot from day one (even before I officially became part of the team). And as true co-pilots do, we shared journeys, difficult moments, problems to solve, last-minute rushes, plenty of laughter, and a few well-deserved celebrations. We said goodbye with a smile—the best and most fitting way to preserve the memory of what has been a wonderful 13-year journey: a tremendous gift, both professionally and personally.

Last year, we had our first hands-on experience inside the operating room during an advanced surgical procedure — a robot-assisted hysterectomy. This year, Nickland Media returned to the Ospedale degli Infermi in Biella for a new and even more challenging project: a full day of six live surgeries (7 hours in the room) for ProctoDay 2025, organized by Dr. Roberto Perinotti, Dr. Mauro Pozzo, and the agency Selene.

With the technical support of Number One - Servizi Tecnici per lo Spettacolo, we delivered a multi-camera live production, featuring two cameras and a third video feed directly from a surgical instrument (a fistuloscope). This setup allowed both the online and on-site audiences to follow each proctological procedure in real time and engage actively through questions and remote presentations.

A special thank-you goes to Nicole Preacco, who joined us in the operating room to manage all audio and video parameters, ensuring smooth transmission throughout the event.
A second special thanks goes to Diego Vannini, who supported us remotely during an unusual situation marked by significant technical congestion.
We’d also like to thank the Clinical Engineering Department, led by Engineer Alberto Petti, and the Technical-IT team — especially Stefano Iachella and Roberto Corrado — for their crucial support in setting up a dedicated VLAN network.

This project was a meaningful step forward for us — a chance to gain valuable field experience while already delivering high-quality, well-received results that make us proud of our work.

For the second year in a row, Nickland Media took part in the Biella Digital Summit. After attending as guests last year, this time we earned the chance to run the show’s video direction. On site we operated a Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD8 (provided by Number One - Servizi Tecnici per lo Spettacolo) to manage feeds from two PTZ cameras, one standard camera, a primary slide deck, an auxiliary slide deck, SuperSource, and two media players—one dedicated to lower-third captions.

We also got hands-on with their new switcher by integrating our Elgato Stream Deck with Bit Focus Companion, letting us automate PTZ presets and SuperSource layouts.

Titled “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for the Future of Business,” the event—organized by Unione Industriale Biellese and hosted by Christian Zegna—featured the Auditorium at Città Studi Biella debut of Silvio La Torre (Senior Professional, Digital & Supply Chains at Confindustria) and Maurizio Savioli (Group Industrial Director, Pattern Group), alongside the welcome return of Marco Camisani Calzolari (AI & cybersecurity expert and science communicator).

A heartfelt thank-you to the entire team we had the pleasure of working with—first and foremost Benedetta Petrini, as well as Ingrid Battistini, Linda Pella, Franco Coppa, Vanna Ronzani, and Laura Ricardi. We’re also grateful to MCC’s PA for the steady support provided from New York City.

This year as well, Nickland Media produced the videos featuring the finalists and winners of the Premio + bellezza in Valle 2025 Award. It was especially exciting to see Mariella Biollino again; with her support and drive back in 2004, we launched the social media communication for Candelo and its Ricetto Di Candelo. This year, Mariella and the Associazione Turistica Pro Loco di Candelo received the Reda 1865 Special Prize for the relevance and uniqueness of the work carried out over the years—researching, caring for, and promoting the beauty of the area. Many thanks as well to Irene Viana, who, at short notice, agreed to be included in the video.
