👁️: gonna be switching up monday moodboards a little by giving you insight into what i’ve learnt over the past week and how to carry it into the next week. i’m by no means a guru, but i love introspective reflection (maybe a little too much). everything i say is based on personal experiences, observations, or conversations with people. see it like a substack.
this week i wanted to speak about something that happened with a friend. in short, she was finishing up on a project and didn’t like the end result. she analysed it to a point where she believed other people would do the same and judge her work. in the end it turned out, it was all in her head. the work was great and was received well. we forget that the average person does not have the same creative eye as you do and won’t pick at things the same way - they’re just there to consume the work.
sometimes you don’t need to have the feeling of work needing to be great, you just need to not kick yourself for it and apply labels to yourself (& work) that don’t serve you, e.g., calling yourself a failure etc. people underestimate the effect of thinking like that because while you may say it in the moment and think it’s harmless, that’s the same energy you’ll carry into future projects. basic physics says energy can’t be destroyed.
so what do you do? stay neutral, you don’t have to convince yourself that work you’re not proud of is good, just don’t give recite labels that don’t serve you. i’m not saying don’t push yourself, definitely do, but always think in ways that serve you. if you wouldn’t speak to a friend or family member the way you don’t yourself, don’t say it. truthfully, any negative labels you give yourself or work are just projections, it’s not necessarily a fact. put out the work, learn what you need from it and carry that energy into the next project. this doesn’t mean having no standards, it means work yourself up to reach your desired standard.
don’t nerf your potential based on how you feel in the moment. There are so many times i never felt right about some work and did s**t anyways - i’m doing it right now as i write ;).
