JEWELLERY WAS NEVER INNOCENT
In August 2026, The Great Design Disaster presents a new exhibition curated by Joy Herro ( ), bringing together artists, designers, architects, and creatives—most of whom have never worked with jewellery before—to create works at the scale of the body. Jewellery becomes a medium for exploring identity, perception, presence, absence, and transformation.
Created for the exhibition, our jewellery works explore the relationship between language, meaning, and the body through wearable forms.
”The Amazing Cat - Portable Poem”
The ring bears the text The Amazing Cat, taken from a story by Daniil Kharms, whose absurd and illogical narratives challenge conventional logic beneath the apparent simplicity of children’s literature.
This logic is translated into the jewel through its exaggerated scale: the text itself becomes a structural constraint that dictates proportion, extending the object beyond functional limits. The resulting imbalance evokes Kharms’ sense of estrangement while recalling a child’s perception of jewellery as precious, oversized, and unattainable.
”Infinite Semiosis”
Inspired by Peirce’s notion of infinite semiosis, the piece is conceived as an unfinished chain of meaning. It functions as a structure through which meaning is continuously produced, displaced, and reinterpreted.
Interwoven and overlapped in a dynamic and open composition, the letters intersect,
rotate and connect, forming a visual network that evokes movement, transformation and continuity. Worn on the body, the piece becomes a mobile system of signs, an open structure that resists closure and invites the wearer to take part in an ongoing process of meaning-making.
