At the 16th floor of Milan’s also hosted the exhibition Warsaw Sao Paulo Milan, a major exhibition of the work of Jorge organized by in collaboration with .
Curated by Berlin-based Polish architect and ETEL’s CEO and curator , the exhibition traced a creative journey that began in Warsaw, came to maturity in São Paulo. At its heart is the work of Jorge Zalszupin, which tells one of the most compelling stories of twentieth-century modernism, one that unfolds between Europe and South America, between architecture and furniture design, and between cultural memory and creative reinvention.
30+ Zalszupin pieces were displayed including the iconic first Dinamarquesa armchair, the organic Pétalas tables, minimalist seating and sofas and, among others, his masterpiece, the Tea Trolley inspired by memories of his childhood. The exhibition featured his architectural projects, original sketches, photographs and materials documenting the history of his company, L’Atelier.
“In 1998, when he was seventy-six years old and about to retire, we met Jorge. He was ready for the next big step. He was calm and quiet, but he still had a sparkle in his eye. That meeting was the starting point of a collaboration that not only brought his iconic furniture back to life, but also reawakened his creativity. Once again, Jorge began designing new objects. In 2008, almost forty years since he created his last piece of furniture, he designed the Veronica armchair, named in honour of his eldest daughter. Our intensive collaboration with Jorge lasted over twenty years and continues today with the help of his daughters. Today, his legacy has gained global recognition: his works are now featured in major collections, auctions, and art fairs around the world”, says Lissa Carmona who has also ideated the first house museum of Brazil, Casa Zalszupin, dedicated to preserving the late architect and designer’s legacy.
