The whirling dervishes, or Mevleví, are Turkish Sufi mystics who practice the Sema ceremony, an active meditation combining music and dance to draw closer to God. Dressed in white robes and felt hats, they symbolize the death of the ego and inner purification. During the ritual, they spin slowly, with the right hand raised to the sky to receive divine grace and the left hand toward the earth to transmit it to the world, mirroring the harmonious movements of the planets: an ecstatic prayer and a spiritual journey, a millennia-old legacy of the poet Rumi.
