NOTORIOUS POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR TORTURE AND MURDER IN AKWA IBOM
Today, May 25, 2026, Hon. Justice Nsemeke Daniel sentenced Sgt. Goodnews Akpan to death by hanging for the torture and killing of a suspect who was being investigated for a bailable offence. The incident occurred on November 19, 2023, while he served in the Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The convicted officer was reportedly trained under the late CSP Ekene Nwosu, a controversial police officer long accused of unlawful detention, extortion, and abuse of citizens. Despite several petitions and complaints submitted to authorities including the Police Force Headquarters, Police Service Commission, National Assembly, and the Nigerian Senate, little action was taken at the time.
This judgment sends a strong message that police brutality, torture, and abuse of power are serious crimes and must not be tolerated in any society.
