NASIR COUNTY: UN DELEGATION HOLDS HIGH-LEVEL ENGAGEMENT IN MANDENG

A high-level United Nations delegation on Friday, August 14, 2026, conducted an official visit to the SPLM-IO headquarters in Mandeng, Nasir County, as part of its engagement with local authorities and community representatives on the prevailing political, security, humanitarian, and human rights situation.
According to a statement issued by the Press Secretariat Office of Nasir County, the delegation included senior representatives from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator, the UN Human Rights, Protection and Peacebuilding sections, and Radio Miraya FM.
The delegation was received and briefed by Nasir County Commissioner James Gatluak Lew. The engagement brought together a broad representation of the county leadership and community, including members of the County Executive Board, women representatives, traditional chiefs, youth leaders, elders, senior military officers, and other community representatives.
KEY ISSUES DISCUSSED
1. Security Situation and Civilian Protection
The meeting reviewed the prevailing security situation in Nasir County and surrounding areas. Participants reportedly exchanged views on the security challenges affecting communities and discussed the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid further escalation of conflict.
Particular emphasis was placed on the protection of civilians, maintaining community safety, and addressing security concerns through dialogue and preventive engagement.
2. South Sudan's Political and Security Crisis
The delegation and county leadership also discussed the continuing national political and security crisis in South Sudan and its consequences for communities at the local level.
Participants stressed that peace and stability remain essential for civilian livelihoods, humanitarian access, the delivery of basic services, and the overall development of affected communities.
3. Calls for the Release of Detainees
The meeting reportedly included calls for the immediate release of political and military detainees.
Participants further emphasised the importance of an inclusive political dialogue involving all relevant stakeholders, describing dialogue and peaceful political engagement as essential avenues for addressing the country's continuing crisis.
4. Humanitarian Situation
The humanitarian situation was another major concern raised during the engagement.
According to the country statement, affected populations continue to face significant humanitarian needs, particularly in:
- Food assistance
- Healthcare services
- Shelter
- Protection services
Participants highlighted the importance of continued humanitarian engagement and support for vulnerable communities.
5. Gender-Based Violence and Accountability
Serious concerns were also raised regarding reported cases of gender-based violence allegedly committed by SSPDF personnel.
Participants called for stronger protection mechanisms, accountability for alleged violations, and concrete preventive measures to protect women and girls from further violence.
The issue was presented as an important component of civilian protection and human rights.
6. Education and the Situation of Children
Country representatives further raised concerns about the condition of education in the area.
They reportedly pointed to:
- Inadequate learning facilities
- Shortages of teaching and learning materials
- Limited educational resources

The representatives stressed the need for greater attention to education as part of efforts to improve the welfare and prospects of local communities.
COUNTY'S POSITION
At the conclusion of the engagement, Nasir County reportedly welcomed the continued presence and engagement of the United Nations and reaffirmed its willingness to work with UNMISS and other international partners.
