Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. And yes, it is a real Shinto festival.

Every April, Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki hosts the Kanamara Matsuri. Giant ph***ic mikoshi are paraded through the streets, vendors sell ph***ic-shaped candy, and thousands of visitors join in.

But the shrine priestess says there is more to it. The festival began in the Edo period, when local s*x workers prayed here for protection from STDs and safe childbirth. By the 1980s it also raised awareness for HIV prevention.

Today it is one of Japan's most inclusive events. Families, elderly visitors, drag queens, tourists and Shinto priests all celebrate together, no judgment attached.

Only in Japan.

You pay your NHI every month. Apparently some politicians found a way around that.

A group of 10 members from the political party Sanseitō, including local assembly members, reportedly enrolled in employee health insurance through companies with little real business activity. This let them pay far less than they would under National Health Insurance (国民健康保険). Some saved up to ¥40,000 per month.

Party leader Sohei Kamiya has publicly apologized, and the party has announced stricter compliance rules going forward.

No criminal charges have been filed, but it has sparked a bigger debate about fairness in Japan's insurance system. If you pay into NHI, you know how steep those bills can get.

🥬 Six APU students are on a mission to put Hiji Town's vegetables on the map!

The "Hiji Veggie Project" started after students fell in love with local produce during a field study. They say the veggies here are the best they've ever tasted, and they want the world to know.

At the recent Joka Karei Festival, they sold 360 servings of curry made with Hiji-grown tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, and onions. They also showcased seasonal picks like zucchini, asparagus, and snap peas.

But they're not stopping there. The team is developing additive-free tomato juice and ketchup using irregular-shaped salt tomatoes from Manai. They're even eyeing furusato nozei (hometown tax) gift sets.

This is what community looks like: students from all over Japan discovering and championing local agriculture, cutting food waste, and supporting farmers.

🚨 STIs in Japan are rising. Please do not ignore this.

If you live in Japan, especially in places like Beppu where many international students and foreign residents live, s*xual health awareness is very important. People come from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, so we must be more responsible about our health and our partners’ health. 💙

Many STIs do not show symptoms at first. A person can look healthy, feel healthy, and still carry an infection. That is why guessing is dangerous.
If you had unprotected s*x, do not panic. But please take action. ✅

You should:
🔹 Avoid s*x with a new partner until you get checked
🔹 Visit a clinic, ladies’ clinic, urology department, hospital, or public health center
🔹 Use condoms with new partners until both people are tested
🔹 Get checked before having s*x with your next partner

In Beppu and Oita, you can ask local clinics or the Oita Prefecture Eastern Public Health Center. Some public health centers offer free and anonymous testing, but you should call first and make a reservation. 📞

Private home testing is also possible. You can order self-collection test kits online, collect the sample at home, send it back to the lab, and receive results depending on the service. This can feel easier for people who are shy, worried about privacy, or uncomfortable visiting a clinic.

Some STIs can be treated. Some, like herpes, can stay in the body and come back. HIV emergency treatment may be possible after exposure, but it must start quickly, usually within 72 hours. Do not wait if you are worried. ⏰

Testing is not shameful. Testing is responsible.
Using condoms is not distrustful. It is respect.🤝❤️

🏪 A 75-year-old man was arrested on the spot after shoplifting a single magazine from a convenience store in Beppu.

Here's what happened: On May 20 around 8:10 PM, the man walked out of a konbini without paying for a magazine worth just 580 yen (about $4). A sharp-eyed store employee noticed, called him back, detained him, and called the police.

Officers arrived and arrested him right there. The man, an unemployed resident of Beppu's Kitamatogahama area, has admitted to the theft. Police are still looking into his reasons.

A good reminder that konbini staff in Japan take shoplifting seriously, no matter how small the item. And yes, you can absolutely get arrested over a magazine.

Stay safe, stay honest, Beppu!

🎋 Tourists caught on camera carving graffiti into bamboo at Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha.

Video from May 16 shows two suspected foreign visitors scratching into bamboo along the Senbon Torii path. A Vietnamese resident filmed and reported the incident.

What we know:
- Over 100 bamboo stalks damaged with names, initials, and dates
- Bamboo cannot heal once carved and risks collapsing
- Similar damage hit Arashiyama last year (350+ trees affected)
- The shrine has posted warnings urging visitors to show respect

As foreign residents, we represent our communities every day. Let's lead by example and protect the places that make Japan special.

🩳 Shorts at work? In Tokyo, it's now a thing.

Governor Yuriko Koike has suggested that male employees at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government can wear half pants (shorts) to work as part of the "Tokyo Cool Biz" initiative to fight summer heat.

Some staff have already started rocking the look at the office. Social media reactions are... mixed, to say the least. But officials say they haven't received a single formal complaint.

The key details:
- It's completely voluntary
- Depends on your job duties
- Cool Biz measures run year-round in Tokyo

Whether you love the idea or think it's a fashion crime, one thing's for sure: Japan's workplace dress code is slowly evolving. Could Beppu offices be next? 😄

Tourism Oita and APU just signed a partnership to shape the future of tourism in Oita Prefecture.

Under the agreement, APU students will use Tourism Oita's data catalog for research and do fieldwork at tourist sites across the prefecture. The goal is sustainable regional development and solving local challenges through tourism.

APU President Yoneyama said he hopes students can "learn more deeply about tourism promotion in the field." Tourism Oita Chairman Wada highlighted APU's international diversity: "We want students to experience Oita's charm and share their different perspectives."

For the international community in Beppu, this is exciting. APU students from dozens of countries could directly influence how Oita markets itself to the world.

A married couple in Tochigi allegedly used a smartphone app to direct four 16-year-old boys in a home invasion that left a 69-year-old man dead with over 20 stab wounds.

The couple stayed away from the scene, giving real-time instructions remotely. The teens met them for the first time that day. One boy told investigators he thought it was a normal part-time job until they arrived at the house.

Police are investigating possible links to "tokuryu," anonymous criminal networks that recruit people online for violent crimes.

This case is a warning. If someone offers you easy money through an app or anonymous message, walk away. These networks are real and they target young people.

Stay safe. Stay aware.

A simple sign at a Japanese convenience store is suddenly making thousands of people emotional online.

The notice explains that several international students are working at the store and politely asks customers for patience if their Japanese is difficult to understand.

It ends with one line that hit many people hard.

“Please warmly support these individuals who are working so hard.”

For many readers, the message feels bigger than customer service.

It reflects the reality of modern Japan’s labor shortage and the growing number of foreign students trying to survive through part-time jobs while adapting to a completely different language and culture.

• The message spreads widely across Japanese social media
• Many users praise the store for showing kindness and honesty
• Others say foreign workers are now becoming essential to daily life in Japan
• Some critics argue businesses rely too heavily on low-paid student labor

What shocked many people most was not the language barrier.
