🩸 High school students in Oita are encouraging more people to donate blood as Japan faces a continued decline in younger donors.

On August 16, 16 student volunteers called for blood donations at shopping facilities in Oita City and Beppu City.

According to the Oita Prefectural Red Cross Blood Center, blood donations among people in their teens to 40s have fallen by around 30% compared with 10 years ago. 📉

Blood donations are essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, and emergency care. Japan currently needs donations from around 14,000 people every day. 🏥❤️

Even one donation can help protect someone's life.

Since the rainy season ended on July 8, Usa City has received only around 8 mm of rain, just 2.6% of the normal amount. Agricultural reservoirs have dropped sharply, with some holding less than 30% of their full capacity. 💧

Rice farmers say this is a critical period because the plants are beginning to produce grain and need plenty of water. If the shortage continues, farmers fear lower harvests and reduced rice quality.

Usa City plans to restrict agricultural water intake by 30% from the end of August, while Nakatsu City may introduce broader water restrictions if the Yabakei Dam falls below 40% capacity.

Forecasts suggest low rainfall may continue across northern Kyushu for about another two weeks. 🌡️🌾

🐸 Rare Light Blue Frog Now on Display at Umitamago Aquarium

A rare light blue Japanese tree frog, believed to occur in only about 1 in 100,000 frogs, is now on display at Umitamago Aquarium in Oita City.

The frog was discovered in Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture, in June 2026 and has been on display at Umitamago since August 7.

Japanese tree frogs normally have yellow, blue, and iridescent pigments that create their usual green appearance. This particular frog lacks the yellow pigment, giving it its unusual light blue color.

Visitors have been surprised by the rare sight, with one saying it was the first time they had ever seen a light blue frog.

Aquarium staff say the frog's color could gradually become greener depending on its environment. They are encouraging visitors to see it while its distinctive light blue color remains.

🏖️ Japan’s traditional summer beach culture is changing dramatically.

According to leisure industry data cited by Nishinippon Shimbun, only about 4.4 million people went sea bathing in 2024, representing an 88% decline from the 1985 peak. The number of swimming beaches across Japan has also fallen by roughly 30% over the past three decades.

The decline is not simply about changing tastes.

☀️ More intense summer heat has increased concerns about sunburn and heatstroke.
🌊 Families are increasingly conscious of drowning and other water-related risks.
🏊 Pools offer controlled water depth, shade, indoor facilities and easier access.
🛍️ Some temporary pools are even being built beside shopping centres, allowing families to combine recreation with everyday activities.

This shift can also be seen in Beppu.

Suginoi Hotel’s seasonal Aquabeat pool has been performing strongly, with visitor numbers reportedly around 2% higher than last year. Its indoor facilities are particularly attractive to families with children, young people and older visitors who want to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme summer heat.

At the same time, seaside businesses are adapting. At Hamasaki Beach in Saga Prefecture, one beach-house operator says around 80% of customers now come mainly for barbecue, while only about 30% actually enter the sea.

This suggests that Japan is not necessarily abandoning coastal leisure. Instead, the way people spend summer is changing.

Convenience, safety, shade and protection from extreme heat are becoming more important than the traditional idea of simply spending the day swimming at the beach.

Japan’s hotter summers may continue to reshape where families choose to spend their holidays and how coastal businesses survive.

♨️ A little warmth from Beppu for Kumamoto.

Beppu City has begun providing hot spring bathing support for people still staying at evacuation shelters following the Kumamoto earthquake.

A mobile hot spring facility called “Genso no Yu” has been set up at a designated evacuation shelter in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and will operate until August 20.

🚛 Around 10 tons of Beppu hot spring water will be transported to the site every day using two dedicated tanker trucks.

The temporary facility includes separate bathing and changing areas for men and women, giving evacuees a chance to relax and recover from the stress of prolonged evacuation life.

Beppu Mayor Yasuhiro Nagano noted that Beppu itself experienced disaster ten years ago and said he hoped the support would also carry the feelings of Beppu residents who want to stand with Kumamoto. ❤️

🏫 A Beppu City employee is now teaching at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) as a part-time lecturer.

Hirokazu Goto, 45, from Beppu City’s Community Collaboration Division, is teaching practical classes in APU’s College of Sustainability and Tourism. Students are learning about tourism, urban development, public spaces and local communities through lectures and fieldwork across Beppu. 🌏📚

Around 90 local residents also joined a public class where students presented ideas for improving Beppu, including ways to encourage young people to use public hot springs and plans to revitalize the Kamegawa area. ♨️🏙️

The program will continue next academic year, giving students more opportunities to use Beppu itself as a real-world classroom.

A 53-year-old company employee was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, on the evening of July 23.

Police received a report that a small passenger car had struck center poles on National Route 10 but continued driving. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a breath test, which detected 0.69 milligrams of alcohol per liter of breath.

The driver reportedly admitted that he had consumed alcohol.

Japan’s revised Road Traffic Act, which took effect on July 21, introduced a clear threshold of 0.5 milligrams or more per liter of breath for determining intoxicated driving. This is believed to be the first arrest in Oita Prefecture under the new standard.
