Himeji Castle is not just a pretty sight. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. With its elegant, white appearance, it is widely considered Japan’s most spectacular castle. The pathway leading to the castle is lined with cherry trees so I can only imagine how beautiful it will look in the springtime. What’s most unbelievable is that unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and is one of Japan’s remaining twelve original castles. What are you waiting for? Add it to your list of places to visit while in Japan.

I have been totally off the grid for a long time, and here’s the reason why. I started my Instagram page to share my love of Japan and my adopted city of Kagoshima which is now like home. At first, Instagram was only a gallery of pictures but little by little that changed.

In my quest to get more followers people suggested to also put up highlights and shortly afterwards stories followed. By the time I edited my photos, wrote a caption, answered comments and made comments on other people’s posts I was spending hours a day on Instagram. Then Reels came along! More pictures and videos to edit and don’t forget the music.

What followed was Instagram burnout. I lost all the joy I once had of sharing Japan with you. So, I decided to take an Instagram break which lasted over a year and a half. Recently, my motivation has slowly returned. My love of Japan and all things Japanese has never changed and now I’m ready to share them with you again.

I’m starting off with Mt. Sakurajima at sunrise. I live across the bay from one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It erupts over 1,000 times a year. People often ask me if it’s scary to live so close to an active volcano but the local people prefer to see plumes of ash because that way we know there’s no build up of pressure.

In my next series of posts I’m going to share a few of my favourite spots in Yamaguchi prefecture. I was surprised at how much the prefecture has to offer and I really wish I had more time to explore more but that will have to wait for another trip.

Although Akama Shrine’s story is a sad one, its beauty left a lasting impression on me. The shrine is dedicated to Antoku, the six year old emperor who perished in the sea in the arms of his grandmother when it was learned the battle had been lost. The inner sanctuary, with its reflecting, blue pond and bright red facade makes for Instagram worthy photos.

When visiting Miyajima Island, I highly recommend taking the rope way up Mount Misen. The peak is 500 meters from sea level and the rope way will take you up the first 400 meters. The last 100 meters you have to walk. When I went, it took about 30 minutes because of ice patches. I saw two young guys go down hard on their butt 😂 There are several Buddhist structures near the peak which belong to Daisho-in Temple at the base of the mountain. At the top, there’s an observatory with panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea.

If you have time, you can hike up one of the three trails that leads to the top. The Daishoin trail is the easiest and takes 1.5-2 hours to reach the top. This will save you the ¥1,840 rope way fee!

Check out my reels for a panoramic view!

Itsukushima shrine in Hiroshima has an interesting story behind it. The shrine was built over the water because Miyajima Island, in its entirety, was considered a god. It is said a location where the tides rise and fall was chosen specifically so the god would not be damaged when they constructed the shrine. Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1996, people from all over Japan, and the world, come to see this floating shrine.

Unfortunately, when we visited, the famous torii gate was under construction and it was low tide so we couldn’t see the beautiful reflection of the shrine on the water which gives me two good reasons to go back!

If you don’t have a car the easiest way to get there is by ferry from Hiroshima (¥4,000 return). Be sure to make a reservation.

Happy International Women’s Day!

To help support women around the world I have been running in the for the past four years (even though I don’t like running 😂) This year’s theme is Healthy Women Healthy World. Proceeds from the registration fee goes towards helping women in poor countries get a better education, medical fees, housing etc. It’s a race for women to support women. Although the race was canceled this year due to Covid, my friend and I put on our T-shirts (thank you ) and ran by ourselves.

Hiroshima Castle, which is listed in the top 100 castles in Japan, is surrounded by a park and carp filled moats which gave it the nickname “Carp Castle” It was first built in 1591 but was almost completely destroyed by the atomic blast in 1945. The keep was reconstructed in 1958 and then renovated in 1989 to become a museum. There’s an observatory on the top floor with spectacular, panoramic views of the city. I wish I had allotted more time to see the castle. We went in the late afternoon and the security man was locking up behind us. We were still on the 5th floor observatory when the closing chime rang😂 It’s a good excuse to go back and for only ¥370 ($3.20usd) it’s well worth it.

How do you harvest the heaviest radishes in the world? With the help of friends, of course! The soil at the foot of active volcano Mt. Sakurajima is very fertile because of the nutrients from the ash. This is where monsters radishes are grown. How heavy is a monster radish? If you guessed 31.1kg (69lbs) you are right! Unfortunately, my 14kg radishes didn’t make the Guinness Book but they made enough salad for a month😂

Harvesting monster radishes burns a lot of calories so lunch at Shirahama cafe where all the dishes were made from radish was the perfect way to end the morning.

The prelude to spring starts with plum blossoms! They were in full bloom until a couple of days ago but it has turned cold with gusts of wind. But, knowing that cherry blossom season is literally around the corner will get me through this cold spell.

I was on my way to the hair salon when I came across a street lined with plum trees. I was walking along taking pictures as soon as I found a safe spot to park my car.

I hope you enjoyed this series on the A-bomb dome in Hiroshima. Although it tells a sad story I thought I would finish on a happier note. One of the reasons the dome remains is
to symbolize the fight to rid the world of nuclear weapons and bring about world peace. Be kind to your neighbor, laugh with friends and always remember Hiroshima.

Did you know that the A-bomb dome was designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel? It was completed in April 1915 and became the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall. It became a landmark with its distinctive green dome. The hall was used for many things including art exhibitions, fairs, cultural events and business functions. Now, it’s a reminder of the first atomic bomb ever dropped.

On a recent trip to Hiroshima I visited one of the most historical buildings in the world, the atomic bomb dome. I took many pictures and read all of the information boards. For the next few posts I want to share the tragedy of this event.

At 8:15am on 6th August 1945, the first atomic bomb in human history was dropped on Hiroshima. Although, the Atomic Bomb Dome was located almost directly underneath the explosion, it somehow avoided complete destruction and the remains of the building still stand today. The residents of Hiroshima decided to keep this tragic reminder of war intact.
