Japanese Cuisine is famous worldwide thanks to iconic dishes such as Sushi or Ramen, but in Japanese culture, street food and Izakaya style food is also an important part of food culture.

Yakitori (焼き鳥) are grilled chicken skewers made from bite sized pieces of meat. Some popular specialties included chicken breast, thighs, skin or liver. Also, Kushiyaki (串焼き), with the same grilling technique, cooked over charcoal is the vegetarian and same irresistible version of yakitori, with vegetables such as onion, green pepper or eggplant. Whenever you combine or eat only one of those, a good fresh beer is the most popular combination to enjoy in Izakayas or festival food stands.

Gion Matsuri (祇園祭), the festival of Yasaka Shrine, is one of the main celebrations in Kyoto and maybe the most important festival all over Japan. The main event consist on a big procession of Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行), a parade of impressive handmade floats that are exhibited all over the main commercial streets of downtown and then drawn by dozens of devots. Every year a “sacred child” or “divine messenger” is selected for the occasion. The boy is not permitted to set foot on the ground from July 13th until he is paraded around the town on July 17th. The ritual's main purpose is to purificate and pacify disease causing entities, but it’s also the right time to celebrate nightlife in Kyoto, thanks to several events, street food tents, etc.

Due to the covid-19, this year this major event won’t be held properly but we all hope it can be done next season.

One of the biggest treasures of Japanese culture is the wide culinary traditions. A must experience while living in Kyoto is to enjoy the genuine Nishiki Market (錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba) , the culinary heart of the city. This narrow old-fashioned street is the best spot to buy and also eat fresh food, unique goods, some souvenirs and many other surprises for the palatinate. Also, around the market there are several cafes and restaurants as well as boutiques and stores. Enjoying the delicious fresh products, buying groceries along with locals, is for sure an experience that will easily become a habit if you live in Kyoto.

Have you ever been to a Japanese food market? What’s the most striking market food you’ve ever seen?

While early spring is famous for Cherry blossom and late Autumn for Momiji, Kyoto is garnished with all sorts of natural wonders all-year-round. May is the month for many flowers to bloom. The intense color of azaleas or the delicate beauty of wisteria flowers beautify gardens and temples and its intense fragrances causes an instant feeling of well-being. Tenryu-ji, the most famous zen temple in Arashiyama hosts an impressive collection of pink, white and coral-colored azaleas that make it a must-visit it in May.

In Japan, many people devote flowers and enjoy each and every seasonal blooming species. How about you? Are you familiar with the unique aroma of some of those flowers?
