104年の歴史を誇り、世界で最も名誉のあるデザインのアワード「ADC ANNUAL AWARDS」で、写真集 「MY BELOVED」がImage-Driven Booksの部門でBRONZE CUBEを受賞しました。この写真集のデザインを評価いただいたことに心から感謝します。写真家であるKim Hakがこのプロジェクトで伝えたいメッセージが、この評価によって世界にも広がっていく。デザイナーとして感激の出来事です。
At the ADC ANNUAL AWARDS, the world's most prestigious design awards with a 104-year history, the photography book MY BELOVED won the BRONZE CUBE in the Image-Driven Books category. カンボジアの写真家であるKim Hakの写真集。BankART（神奈川）で開催された展覧会「MY BELOVED: Kim Hak」（2024）に合わせて制作した。このプロジェクトは、KIM HAKが10年間に渡り旅をしながら撮影したカンボジアの風景の記録として構成している。KIM HAKの他の作品である「Alive」が、カンボジアの負の側面をテーマにしたプロジェクトであることと対照的に、このプロジェクトはカンボジアに流れる穏やかな時間と、その豊かな色彩を世界に伝えることを意図している。それらの写真は全て、夜が静かに明ける瞬間の柔らかな朝の光に包まれた時間に撮影されている。その時間性を表現するために柔らかい用紙で袋とじの手法で表現している。カンボジアの伝統的な手織り布「クロマー」を表紙に使用している。「クロマー」は、スカーフやテーブルクロス、ソファカバーなど、さまざまな用途に使える『万能布』で多種多様の柄があり身近なアイテムである。この写真集では、20種の異なる柄やカラーのクロマーを使用した。つまり20種類の表紙が存在する。クロマーの実際の用途のようにファッション的に好みの表紙を選んでもらうことも目的とした。また、刊行後の2024年12月に「クロマー」は、ユネスコの世界無形文化遺産に登録されたことがとても印象的である。
A photo book by Cambodian photographer Kim Hak. This book was created to accompany the exhibition “KIM HAK: MY BELOVED,” held at BankART (Kanagawa, Japan) from November 2 to 17, 2024. This project is a visual record of the Cambodian landscapes that Kim Hak photographed over the course of 10 years of travel. In contrast to his other work, “Alive,” which focuses on Cambodia’s darker negative aspects, this project aims to share the serene moments and vibrant colors of Cambodia with the world. All of the photographs were taken in the soft morning light, just as the night was quietly ending. To reflect this delicate sense of time, the book uses soft paper and employs a saddle-stitched binding. The cover is made of Cambodia’s traditional handwoven fabric, krama. Known as a versatile cloth, krama is a familiar item in Cambodian culture, used as scarves, tablecloths, or sofa covers, and it comes in a wide variety of patterns and colors. This photo book incorporates 20 different patterns and colors of krama, resulting in 20 unique cover designs. The intention is for readers to select their favorite cover, much like choosing a krama for its aesthetic and practical use. Notably, in December 2024, shortly after the book’s release, krama was inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, adding a meaningful layer to the project.
