About the unspoken understandings shared in Japan😳🌸

In Japan, people move harmoniously even without explicit instructions. It’s the way people quietly know where to line up on train platforms. It’s the way the person standing closest to the elevator buttons holds the door and waits to get off until everyone else has exited. It’s the way a group of friends waits until everyone’s dishes have arrived before taking the first bite.

Non-verbal cues guide people’s everyday movements, and Deep Japan writer Motoki Sawada reflects on the nuances and complexities of life shaped by what is left unsaid.

The Golden Madeleine: Baking kindness into every bite🌟

"There are bakeries, and then there are missions disguised as bakeries. MO’PRECIOUS, tucked away in the leafy residential neighbourhood of Togoshi in Tokyo’s Shinagawa ward, belongs firmly in the latter category. Founded by Kanako Matsumoto, known affectionately to her community as “Kana Banana”, the shop operates under the disarmingly simple philosophy that a single, exquisitely made madeleine can carry warmth, nourishment, and genuine human kindness from one pair of hands to another."

Deep Japan writer Sébastien Raineri tells the beautiful story of Kanako Matsumoto and her dream of becoming “the world’s greatest socially contributing madeleine shop”😌🥹

Tips for playing golf in the heat😎☀️

Our next Charity Golf Cup is taking place on July 11th, and you know what that means...it’s going to get HEATED. Competition-wise too maybe, but weather-wise for sure!

If it’s a sunny day, temperatures could easily reach 30°C, which means it’s important to be smart about managing heat, hydration, and energy throughout the round.

Besides the obvious, like protecting yourself from the sun and hydrating before you feel thirsty, here are a few quick tips worth keeping in mind as we approach golf day!

⛳️ Swing smoother, not harder ⛳️
Trying to overpower the ball in hot weather can lead to fatigue and sloppy contact, so focus on maintaining a relaxed tempo.

🍌 Eat light but consistently 🍌
This is admittedly difficult when the lunch options at EastWood are so delicious, but it might be smart to snack on nuts, bananas, sports jelly packs, and other light foods while on the course. At lunchtime, consider choosing a lighter option like soba noodles. One heavy meal can make you feel surprisingly sluggish in the heat!

What other summer golf tips can you think of?

Contact our fabulous JI Golf Concierge, Kiyo Kudoh ([email protected]), if you would like to join us for our group day...and please do!!😌

Japan Gay Guide…the magazine!🏳️‍🌈🌟

When you think of Japan, you probably think conservative, reserved, and traditional. That is true, but it doesn’t mean safe spaces for self-expression don’t exist. In the realm of LGBTQ+ culture and inclusivity, Japan Gay Guide is leading the way not only through its online presence, but now as a physical magazine you can find for free at select locations in Shinjuku Nichome!

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of being invited to the magazine’s launch party and meeting the team behind the magic. It really felt like one big family, with everybody doing their part in a shared mission to help make even one more traveler to Japan (or anyone already here) feel loved and celebrated for being exactly themselves.

A big thank you to the Japan Gay Guide team for having me! Please go follow all of their socials and support their work😁

Food for all people🧡

That’s the mission of Second Harvest, Japan’s first incorporated food bank.

I received the organization’s 2025 annual report in the mail yesterday, outlining not only their achievements, including supporting over one million people and providing more than 2.5 million meals, but also their goals for the future.

By 2030, they hope to increase their food distribution volume tenfold, strengthening their efforts even further to meet the growing demands caused by rising living costs and the increasing frequency of natural disasters.

Second Harvest is an organization we are incredibly honored to support through our Jarman International Charity Golf Cups at EastWood Country Club. While all donations are voluntary, we hope you’ll join us for a great day of golf in support of an even greater cause🌟

Our next Charity Golf Cup will be held on Saturday, July 11th!

For questions, please contact our JI Golf Concierge, Kiyo Kudoh, at [email protected].

What are some of your favorite books about Japan, and why?🌟

Deep Japan writer John Rucynski recently wrote a piece highlighting eight reasons to read "Eight Million Ways to Happiness" by Hiroko Yoda, which explores the question, “Is Japan a religious country?” and much more.

John’s piece encouraged me to purchase the Audible version, and I’m excited to start listening to it on my daily osanpo walks😆

Have you read this book? Any thoughts? (No spoilers, please)😌

Important question…what is your favorite Baskin Robbins flavor?😎

No, it isn’t a Japanese ice cream brand, but Baskin Robbins (we call it “thirty-one ice cream” here because of its number of monthly rotating flavors) is deeply beloved. I have seen other ice cream brands like Cold Stone Creamery, Häagen-Dazs, and Blue Seal come and go with their locations (I personally loved Cold Stone!), but it seems Baskin Robbins has cracked the code on what Japanese ice cream lovers want and is here to stay.

Do you have a theory as to what makes Baskin Robbins so popular here?🥸

Besides the fact that their ice cream is really delicious, I think their rotating flavors appeal to people here because we’re all about enjoying foods along with the changing seasons. Also, is it their pastel-colored branding that appeals to all ages? Interesting to think about😆

Ocean or mountains?💙💚

I’ve always been more of a mountain gal. I’d choose hiking over swimming or lounging on a beach (which might be a little surprising considering I have family in Hawaii, haha!). But maybe it’s exactly because of that that I don’t feel drawn to go to the beach anywhere BUT Hawaii. I’m perhaps a bit spoiled...😆

Recently, though, I went to the coast for the first time in a while and was reminded of the soothing wonders of the ocean. I didn’t swim or even step onto the sand, but just stood and watched the waves come and go, carrying the Shonan surfers gently along.

I’ve been hiking a lot in the area, so it really struck me how different the ocean’s charm is from the mountains. I’d still consider myself a mountain gal, but I can definitely appreciate the ocean too😁

Ahead of the crowds💛

One of my favorite aspects of getting to work at the Osaka Expo last year was experiencing the quiet, crowd-free mornings. As staff, we had access to the grounds ahead of the crowds, which meant I could really marvel at the various structures and details.

I remember savoring these moments and taking them in as an opportunity to ground myself before the excitement and energy of the day began😊

The big snacks conbini trend😎

I am a big conbini snack girlie, so I often stop in to scavenge for my usual faves and check out new releases. Speaking of big, I’ve noticed a fun trend across different conbini brands where they are releasing large-size versions of their products.

I think it has already ended, but for example, Lawson had a campaign selling their sweets at twice the usual size for the same price! Then I started spotting other oversized treats, like this big financier at FamilyMart, plus a big baumkuchen and a big cookie. I also found a huge Pucchin Purin at 7-11, which really was a hefty fellah!

I haven’t tried any of the big series yet, but have you? For a country famous for relatively small portions, I was delighted and pretty impressed to see them going for these giant sizes, haha! We all gotta indulge a little (I guess not so little in this case)😆
