People would never blame someone who became the family’s breadwinner or the person everyone runs to in times of crisis. Before all the pressure and expectations, that person simply wanted to help the people they loved.

But what happens when that same person starts drowning?

The hardest part is knowing that if they stop helping, they may be seen as selfish or uncaring. Yet it also hurts them deeply to watch their loved ones struggle when they cannot do more. If they finally speak up about their exhaustion, some people accuse them of complaining or remind them of the help and sacrifices they’ve made, as if their pain suddenly becomes invalid.

So where do they belong?

Many choose to stay silent. They carry the pressure alone. They overthink. They hide their struggles. They smile because seeing their family happy brings them joy, but inside they are carrying weights no one notices.

Every day, they wake up and press the reset button. No matter how tired they were yesterday, they get up and choose to be strong again because they feel they have no other choice. The bills still need to be paid. The problems still need solutions. The people they love still need support.

But what many people do not realize is that the body keeps score.

Some become so used to carrying everyone’s burdens that they stop noticing their own exhaustion. They ignore the stress, the sleepless nights, the anxiety, the headaches, the constant fatigue. They keep pushing forward until one day their body starts refusing what their heart has been demanding for years.

Sometimes the strongest people are not weak when they finally break down. They are simply tired. Tired from carrying what was meant to be shared by many shoulders, not just one.

Sometimes what they need is not another person saying, “Ask Ate,” or “Ask Kuya,” or “They can handle it.”

What they need is someone saying:

“I can help with this.”
“I don’t have much, but this is what I can contribute.”
“How can we lighten your load?”

Family is supposed to support one another, understand one another, and carry burdens together not place the entire weight on the shoulders of the person who has always been willing to help.

Because even the person who looks the strongest, the one who always finds a way, the one everyone depends on, is still human. They get tired. They get overwhelmed. They need rest. They need understanding. And sometimes, they need someone to carry them for a while too.
