We need to talk about this El Niño narrative because the government and mainstream media in Kenya are playing us for fools.
Every time you turn on TV stations like Citizen TV , NTV , KTN News, or read the local news papers like Nation , Standard Digital , The Star, it is just pure El Nino panic.
They keep telling us that El Niño is coming, the sun will vanish for four months, and we should prepare for an absolute apocalypse.
Then right after that, you hear politicians shouting about El Niño preparedness funds.
Let us be real for a minute.
El Niño does not create a brand-new rainy season out of nowhere.
It just means our usual October to December short rains will be boosted for heavier downpours and louder thunder.
But the sun is not going anywhere.
If you live in Kisumu, you already know the routine.
The morning starts with a scorching, hot sun that can melt your shoes.
Then that intense midday heat builds up the clouds, and it rains like crazy later in the evening.
So why is the media completely silent about the daytime sun?
Simple. You cannot lobby for billions of shillings in international donor funds or squeeze emergency cash from the Treasury by showing a beautiful, sunny morning.
To get that donor money, you have to sell a total, pitch-black catastrophe.
But down on the ground, things are genuinely bad for our healthcare system.
While politicians are fighting for funds, our local hospitals are drowning. Social Health Authority SHA disbursements have been delayed for months, leaving hospitals with zero cash flow.
Now add El Niño blackouts on top of unpaid Kenya Power KPLC electricity bills.
How will these facilities even buy diesel for backup generators when KPLC lines inevitably snap in the storms?
It is a disaster waiting to happen.
