When Creativity Decides to Take a Vacation...
You ever sit down, ready to create the next big thing, only to have your brain hit you with... absolutely NOTHING? 🙃 Welcome to the “Where’s My Creativity?” zone—a place I know all too well as a digital marketer, graphic designer, and web designer.
Some days I’m on fire—ideas are flowing, designs are clicking, campaigns are brilliant. And other days? I stare at my screen, sip my coffee, and think, "Should I just design a logo with a random squiggle and call it a day?" 🌀
It’s not just the design work, either. Even on LinkedIn, I’ve had many moments where I’m like, “What am I supposed to post today? Do I even have anything interesting to say?!” (Spoiler: most times I don’t). 😅
The thing is, creativity isn’t an endless well. Sometimes it runs dry. And that’s OK!
So, what do I do when creativity taps out?
✔ Take a break: Yup, sometimes you just need to step away from the screen. Get a snack, take a walk, or stare out the window like a moody protagonist in a movie. 🍂 It helps more than you think.
✔ Distract your brain: I’ll watch a funny video, scroll through memes (who doesn’t love a good meme break?), or even start working on something completely unrelated. Letting my brain breathe often sparks new ideas!
✔ Talk it out: Sometimes, chatting with someone else about the project or even just life can lead to that lightbulb moment 💡. Ideas can come when you’re least expecting them.
✔ Embrace the block: Creativity can’t be forced. Instead of fighting it, I let it be and trust it’ll come back. After all, no one’s creative all the time—except maybe Bob Ross 😂 🙌
And now, cue my current situation: I’m working on a product label design for a mocktail syrup company. First, I’m supposed to create a minimalistic logo, then move on to designing the label that will go on the bottle. Sounds exciting, right? But my creativity has decided to take a day off. 😅
So yeah, here I am, staring at my screen and waiting for the magic to happen… it’s part of the process, I guess!
How do you deal with creative blocks?
