There are several varieties of asparagus that have been grown in several years. They are Mary Washington, UC72, UC157, new Jersey and Atlas.

The is how the producing from the best to the least.
1. Atlas
2. Uc157
3. New jersey
4. Mary Washington
5. UC 72

Atlas has very good attributes a variety that survives both in Highlands and lowlands.

Why Atlas F1™?
● Early, vigorous and excellent yielder
● When grown under tunnels it becomes an early type
● 20-50% higher yielding than UC 157 F1
● Medium to large green spears with slight purple at the tip and butt
● For use in both green and white production
● Tightly headed for smooth appearance; tapering spears with cylindrical shape
● Maintains tight head under hot growing conditions
● Tolerant to fusarium, rust, blight and cercospora foliar diseases.

If you have existing asparagus fields of other varieties that you plan to expand, try out Atlas F1. Don't just plant asparagus plant Atlas F1.

I have seen people saying ooh you are preaching asparagus; it is the next quail business.

Here are key things to note about asparagus and me selling asparagus seeds.
1. Asparagus is not new in the Kenyan soils it has been grown as early as the 70s.

2. I am not the first person to sell asparagus seeds, you can get seeds from continental seeds or east Africa seeds, they are cheap they sell a packet of UC 72 and Mary Washington at around 900-1200 per pack. My smallest pack of 3g I sell at ksh1,000 since it's atlas and thats the global retail price.

3. You can get seeds in Gilgil at around 25k for a kg of asparagus. The generation is unknown unlike mine which I source from a reputable seed breeder.

4. Where is the problem if good food became available to the local markets.
Why don't we grow the most expensive and enjoy ourselves. Read the health benefits of asparagus.

5. Asparagus is an expensive venture and requires good market connections .

6. I am not here for the very new person into Asparagus farming, I am here for the person who wants to start it right with the right seeds.

7. If you feel asparagus farming is quail because the largest market is export, then hass avocados are quails also.

8. Asparagus can thrive in kajiado, Narok, Nakuru , some parts of ukambani, coastal region, Highlands that produces potatoes in large, selected soils in central Kenya, sugarcane belts and maize belts areas.

The largest asparagus farm I've known for the last 3yrs has an acreage of 200 acres. But now the largest in Kenya in my records is 300 acres and set to expand to thousands. The farm is along the coastal line where asparagus thrives the best.

One of the varieties that's doing so well is Atlas F1 which is drought resistant and has a high production.

These farms have direct exports to particular countries, you can never find their produce locally.

Below is a snap of the 300 acres being grown in Kenya.

Let me answer this question about the asparagus market.
Asparagus is a high end vegetable that's consumed in the suburbs making it unavailable in the local markets. Of course no common mwananchi will buy a kilo of asparagus at 1,000 bob.

Asparagus has selected markets, which we as Asparagus Hub Kenya offers a platform where buyers and sellers can interact.

Secondly we are seed merchants, we facilitate you getting quality seeds and even go an extra mile to give a platform where you can find buyers;

Asparagus market is very lucrative, I know a few farms doing 10 acres plus and they sell above ksh500 per kg.

Now, if you find interest in asparagus farming we are here to guide you from seed selection farm preparation to planting up to harvesting and marketing.

Know your market niche, then come we sell you seeds.
