It was a pleasure working with the senior management team from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, led by Immaculate Kassait, SC, MBS, on media relations.
I had the pleasure of co-facilitating the sessions with Terryanne Chebet (MPRSK), which meant the conversations were as enjoyable as they were thought-provoking.

Chasing this cold with a cup of steaming coffee, I was rummaging through a drawer and came across this mug.
A gift from a client years ago.
Funny how the smallest things stick around long after projects end. Good work pays the bills, but good relationships leave you with random mugs you still smile at years later.

Something interesting happens when you ask communities about projects.
They rarely start with budgets.
They rarely talk about indicators.
They almost never mention logframes.
Instead, they talk about whether they were involved.
Whether their concerns were heard.
Whether their suggestions were considered.
As we review field findings in Naivasha following visits across Narok and Kajiado, that lesson keeps resurfacing.
Working alongside NEMA and partners including Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), IUCN, NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT TRUST FUND (NETFUND-Kenya) and African Conservation Centre, we have been applying the Listening Index to better understand these experiences.
Because long after project activities are completed, people tend to remember one thing: how they were engaged.
And that can make all the difference.

Another week in the field with the NEMA team.
Several project sites.
Many kilometres on the road.
Countless conversations.
And one recurring lesson: development work is ultimately about people.
Behind every project document, monitoring framework, and progress report are individuals and communities whose experiences provide the clearest measure of success.

Today's classroom had no walls.
In Tikoishi, Kajiado County, the Naboisha Women Group took us through the realities of hay production; sharing lessons that come from experience, not theory.
This is what stakeholder engagement should look like: creating space for those closest to the work to lead the conversation.
And yes, some of the best learning happens while balancing a notebook, standing in a field, and hoping your handwriting remains readable.

Not all feedback is meant to change decisions. And that’s okay.
The problem is when we don’t make that clear.
So people share their input thinking they are shaping something… when in reality, the decision is already made.
That gap is where frustration builds.
Clarity doesn’t weaken engagement. It actually makes it more honest.

A room full of finance and standards professionals discussing communication strategy is actually more exciting than it sounds 😄.
Had a great session with the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board - PSASB exploring how institutions can communicate with more clarity, confidence and impact. We had practical conversations on simplifying messages, handling stakeholders and building public trust.
Because even the best policies need good communication to be understood and trusted.

Day two of training, the conversations are getting even more interesting.
We are diving into understanding crisis in logistics and how preparation, communication, and quick decisions can make all the difference when challenges come up.
One thing I am enjoying about these sessions is how practical the conversations are. Everyone has a story, a lesson, and an experience to share.
