The Boardroom: When a colleague breaks rank to undermine your authority in a meeting, they are not debating your ROI. They are signaling that they do not regard your appointment. They respected the previous title holder, not the current vision holder.

The Corridor: Those hushed conversations over ugali and kachumbari in the canteen? The ones questioning your new brand direction? It is rarely about the data. It is about the threat your competence poses to their comfort.
If they cannot defend your strategy without mentioning your title, their criticism was never about the strategy.
COUNSEL TO THE VARIOUS LEVELS:

๐Ÿ”น To the Junior Brand Executive: Stop seeking validation from the gossip circle. The person who laughs with you about the CEO at lunch is the same person who will submit your resignation letter first. Regard the role, not the rumor.

๐Ÿ”น To the Mid-Level Manager: You are trapped between the fatigue of old guards and the impatience of new hires. Your currency is executional fidelity. Do not trade your vision for temporary camaraderie. Respect the office above you, even if you do not yet feel the vision.

๐Ÿ”น To the Senior Leadership (C-Suite): Stop mistaking "quiet offices" for alignment. In the East African context, silence is often calculated subversion. If your team breaks rank to "protect the brand" by destroying a colleague, you are not building a legacy. You are curating a coup.

THE BOTTOM LINE (Fact-based):
We have audited 14 regional brand collapses over 5 years. In 11 of those cases, the balance sheet was healthy 18 months prior to collapse. The killer was not the competitor. The killer was the insider who refused to regard the seatโ€”thereby killing the vision by suffocating the visionary.
