Martha Karua Is Not Honest Enough

According to media it has emerged that the United Alternative Government retreat has been postponed more than two times due to Martha Karua commitments in Uganda and Principals have given her a benefit of doubt in the interest of Jumuiya.

Equally notable is the contrast in Karua's public responses to endorsements within the coalition. Peter Munya's endorsement of Fred Matiang'i did not attract a similarly forceful public reaction from her yet the endorsement of Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has drawn strong reaction Whether justified or not, this difference in response has led some observers to perceive a double standard and in bad taste.

Martha Karua has also consistently and openly argued that the coalition should adopt a scientific and objective method of selecting its presidential candidate. That position is understandable. However she has made it clear that she would decline to serve as a deputy if another candidate is selected have prompted critics to question whether the commitment to a collective process extends to accepting its outcome.

In politics, credibility depends not only on the values leaders proclaim but also on how consistently those values are applied. When actions appear selective or inconsistent, public confidence can be undermined. Leaders who demand fairness, transparency, and accountability from others should be prepared to demonstrate the same standards in their own political conduct.

Critics say that they can see her through the prism of her own inconsistencies and possible sabotage.

Why Delaying the Presidential Candidate Could Weaken the Opposition's International Standing

A credible presidential campaign is not only directed at domestic voters. It also shapes how the international community, investors, diplomatic missions, and business leaders understand a country's potential political direction. For an opposition coalition seeking to govern, prolonged uncertainty over its presidential candidate can limit opportunities to communicate its vision.

International partners generally want to know who could lead the country, who would make up the leadership team, and what policy priorities they would pursue. Until a coalition identifies its presidential candidate, there is often no single figure who can consistently articulate its agenda or represent it in high-level engagements.

Diplomatic missions seek to understand the policy positions of major political actors on issues such as governance, regional security, trade, foreign policy, and economic management. While diplomats engage with a range of political leaders, a clearly identified presidential candidate provides a focal point for sustained dialogue and policy discussions.

Business organizations and chambers of commerce also look for clarity. Investors typically want to understand an opposition's economic philosophy, fiscal priorities, tax proposals, regulatory approach, infrastructure agenda, and plans for maintaining a stable investment climate. The earlier those positions are communicated by a recognized presidential candidate, the more time there is for scrutiny, dialogue, and confidence-building.

International investors similarly assess political transitions by looking beyond campaign rhetoric. They seek consistency, identifiable leadership, and credible economic plans. A delayed nomination can shorten the period available for the opposition to explain how it would manage the economy, encourage investment, create jobs, and maintain macroeconomic stability.

At home, prolonged uncertainty can also make it harder for supporters to rally around a unified message. Coalition leaders may remain occupied with internal negotiations when they could instead be presenting policy alternatives and expanding their national campaign.

For these reasons, delaying the announcement of a presidential candidate carries political risks. It can compress campaign preparation, reduce opportunities to communicate with domestic and international stakeholders, and leave less time to build confidence in the coalition's readiness to govern. Whether those risks prove decisive depends on many factors, but an early, clear nomination generally gives an opposition coalition more time to organize, explain its agenda, and present itself as a credible alternative government.

To All Opposition Leaders and Supporters

JB Muturi has opened a vicious chapter that many had long feared to confront. By publicly raising the conversation about the opposition settling on a presidential candidate early, he has shifted the political debate from speculation to strategy.

The deafening silence from government figures is, to many observers, telling. It suggests that the message has landed squarely within the ruling political formation. An opposition that identifies its candidate early changes the dynamics of the contest. It moves from reacting to events to setting the national agenda.

An early candidate provides a focal point around which a campaign structure can be built. It allows for the formation of diplomatic, legal, financial, media, logistics, and grassroots mobilisation teams. It gives coalition partners time to resolve internal differences, coordinate their efforts, and present a coherent alternative government to the country.

Most importantly, an early nominee shifts public attention. Instead of politics revolving solely around the incumbent, the national conversation begins to focus on the alternative. Policies are debated, leadership is scrutinised, and citizens can evaluate competing visions for Kenya's future. That is precisely how competitive democracies mature.

There is also a political reality that cannot be ignored: once a united opposition has an identifiable leader and an organised structure, it becomes more difficult to isolate individual leaders or weaken the movement through fragmented political pressure. Unity creates resilience.

The lesson is simple. Delaying the choice of a presidential candidate does not strengthen the opposition—it weakens it. Every month lost is a month gained by the incumbent president Ruto, who already enjoys the advantages of office, established state structures, and a permanent campaign machinery.

The opposition's greatest asset is unity, and unity requires a centre of gravity. That centre is an agreed presidential candidate. The sooner that decision is made, the sooner the country can engage in a meaningful contest of ideas rather than prolonged speculation over personalities.

The urgency is no longer about politics alone; it is about giving Kenyans a credible, organised, and prepared alternative. History rarely rewards those who wait until the last minute to organise for power
