In this digital era, emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, Robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are reshaping industries, institutions, and societies. The cross-cutting nature of AI provides the potential to globally revolutionize agriculture, healthcare, education, climate action, financial inclusion, infrastructure management, and public service delivery.
The strategic focus on AI is emphasised in the AU Continental AI Strategy (2024), which sets a people-centered, inclusive, and development-oriented roadmap for leveraging AI across sectors while safeguarding African values, ethics, and sovereignty.
In alignment with the global and continental aspirations, the East African Community (EAC) has demonstrated a forward-looking vision in placing Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) at the heart of its regional development agenda.
The recently adopted EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (2023โ2033) demonstrates a robust regional approach to emerging technologies by identifying digital technologies, Big Data, AI, biotechnology, and space science as among the key strategic focus areas.
The East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and the Inter University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) have been championing for STI as a driver for regional socio-economic transformation. The commitment to action is demonstrated by various joint initiatives between EASTECO and IUCEA, which include the organisation of the biennial EAC Regional STI Conference and joint implementation of collaborative initiatives with diverse partners.
The 4th EAC Regional STI Conference, themed โHarnessing Artificial Intelligence for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Innovative East Africa,โ is designed to address and share solutions to the gaps and challenges that are related tothe AI divide, limited skills, inadequate infrastructure, ethical deployment, governance frameworks, and regulatory readiness, among others.
The Conference, to be convened in Kigali, Rwanda, from 30th March to 1st April, 2026, will be the first to focus entirely on AI as a cross-cutting driver of innovation, digital transformation, and inclusive development.
