If there's anything 2020 has taught us, is how to adapt. Trying to train your mind to understand that it's time to work when you are in a home environment is not the easiest thing. There are so many reasons to get distracted, but you have the final say. Distractions seem harmless until its 4PM and you are wondering how time flew by so fast. Take back control of your time. You'll be surprised at how much time you actually have in a day with a little more focus on the things that count.
Do you/have you had to work from home? How's it been trying to maintain focus?

Cont'd.

"I found myself working in public vehicles trying to meet deadlines, and constantly missing assignments - I was doing too much and something had to give in. I realized that you can do so much in a day and still not do anything meaningful because at the end of the day, your hands can't be productive beyond the state of your mind. Long story short, I let go of the contract and having more time to be creative I ended earning over 4 times as much monthly in the following months of that same year. "

Quality mind, quality hands.

Story time.
"In 2015 I was juggling between a contract that required me to be in an office 8 hrs a day, running my business and working on my diploma doing evening classes everyday (including Saturday mornings). A typical day for me would entail going from the eastlands of Nairobi to Thika road in the morning, heading to Lower Kabete for evening classes, then back home to Eastlands to work on any pending work or school assignments. This was my life for months..."

By the time a client comes to you they were most likely attracted to you by a referral or your past work. You don’t have to keep selling them how good you are at your job once they can see you can do it. At this point you need to show them how easy you intend to make it for them to receive their work. Remember, by offering a service, you are the solution to a problem. Sell those factors that make your process easier for the client - Sell convenience.

Design being a service will cause you to encounter all manner of individuals. However much you try avoid it, annoying encounters will happen. But it's how you deal with them that will determine how you are treated in future transactions. One rule applies for all 3 of the above situations; the more you give, the more you lose.

'When I began my design journey I got an opportunity to work with one of the biggest artistes in kenya at the time. Though what I was earning wasn't much, the work that stemmed from his name being on my portfolio is still paying off today. Forget the hype and understand where you are in your journey. Before you add value to others (and get good pay for it), you must build it in you. Invest in your future but beware of 'suckers' along the way (more on this to come).'

You can't get anything out of nothing. Many wait for work to come to put their hands to work, not knowing that you need to put your hands to work FIRST to draw some attention to you. Get some personal projects going, and do it for the love it. You'll be surprised at how much there is to gain when you invest time in your self development.

I must admit I was a little late to the party when it came to Trello. My desk was ever cluttered with sticky notes. Sticky notes on desktop were no better-messy on the screen and no heads up when a deadline approaches. As a young creative, start your day the night before by planning your days agenda, it'll keep you accountable for your time and speed up your process significantly.

As you reach a point where you seem to gain really beneficial information, you may feel the need to hold on to the information for yourself. What you don't realize is there's so much more to learn. If you keep holding on to what you know like it's all there is to know, that's all you'll know. Share what you learn, share the resources you learned with, answer questions. You'd be surprised at how much more what learn sticks with you.
