A Father’s Unending Fight: Giving Fyona Another Chance at Life
Fyona Wanjiku Kabitta has spent nearly her entire life fighting battles no child should ever face.
Her journey began just two months after birth, when she survived tuberculosis. At six years old, she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Five years later, in 2011, Fyona made history as Kenya’s youngest kidney transplant recipient, receiving a kidney donated by her father, Walter Kabitta — an act of love that defined a family’s sacrifice.
However, Fyona’s medical journey grew increasingly complex. In 2019, doctors in India diagnosed her with a highly sensitised condition, drastically reducing transplant compatibility. That same year, tragedy struck again when Fyona’s mother passed away from a heart attack, emotionally overwhelmed by years of watching her child suffer.
A second kidney transplant in 2020 initially offered hope, but complications persisted. In June 2022, doctors made the painful decision to remove the kidney to save her life. Since then, Fyona has been living without any kidney, enduring dialysis alongside severe complications affecting her heart, blood pressure, bones, teeth, and overall health.
From March 2022 to December 2025, Fyona remained in India seeking treatment, but financial exhaustion forced her return to Kenya. Today, her survival depends on continued dialysis and the possibility of a third transplant.
Fyona’s story has been featured on Citizen TV and in national newspapers, bringing national attention to her fight — but awareness alone is not enough.
This is a call to action. A call for compassion.
