Today, the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS together with his Management team hosted the Migori County Governor H.E. Dr. Ochilo Ayacko who was accompanied by Nyatike MP Hon. Tom Ondege and officials from the County Government.

The discussions focused on advancing the implementation and sustainability of Lower Kuja Irrigation Development Project, with particular attention to the project design, compensation of Project Affected Persons (PAPs), mechanization and market access for agricultural produce.

The meeting also explored measures to accelerate completion of the project and unlock its full irrigation potential of 19,000 acres and further expand to 55,000 acres with the development of Gogo Dam.

The team agreed to strengthen collaboration to ensure that Lower Kuja Irrigation Project realizes its full potential and contributes to the success and long-term sustainability of the Migori County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP), by providing a reliable foundation for increased agricultural production and agro-industrial development.

Flooding in the Lower Kuja area was also discussed, with both parties exploring ways to collaborate and fast-track completion of the d***s as part of measures to mitigate the impact of anticipated heavy rains.

NIA and the County Government of Migori reaffirmed their commitment to working together to unlock the region’s agricultural potential, strengthen rice production, create employment and improve livelihoods in line with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The Chief Executive Officer alongside senior management, today hosted the newly elected leaders of the Perkerra Irrigation Water Users Association (IWUA) and Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) for a consultative meeting at the Authority’s Head Office in Irrigation House, Nairobi.

Following the successful conclusion of their elections on August 28, 2026, the elected leaders transitioned immediately from the polling station into strategic planning to hit the ground running.

This key engagement laid a solid operational foundation for the team, centering on Kenya’s legal and policy frameworks for sustainable irrigation management.

Deliberations focused heavily on optimizing Operations and Maintenance (O&M) through structured fee collection systems and collaborative oversight.

Together, NIA management and the farmers leadership explored practical strategies to upgrade scheme infrastructure, ensuring protection of the schemes assets and fair, equitable water distribution to all farmers.

Emphasizing a fresh era of transparent governance, the leaders pledged to drive a proactive, accountable approach to irrigation service delivery.

The CEO and his management team reaffirmed their full commitment to supporting the new leadership in boosting crop productivity across Perkerra Irrigation Scheme, advancing national food security under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Today, the NIA Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, alongside other senior managers hosted the Agricultural Finance Corporation led by the Board Chairman, Eng. John M. Mruttu and the Managing Director, George Kubai for a consultative meeting with Bura Irrigation Scheme farmers representatives.

Recognizing the crucial role access to credit plays in sustaining agricultural production, the discussion focused on resolving outstanding loan default challenges and developing a fair, workable repayment formula tailored to the Bura farmers' current economic realities.

Beyond addressing past arrears, the meeting laid the groundwork for the reintroduction of loan facilities under restructured, transparent terms designed to rebuild financial trust and restore farm liquidity in Bura.

To ensure these solutions are effectively implemented, a joint committee comprising representatives from both institutions and the farmers was officially appointed to work on the operational framework, bridging the gap between credit institution and producers to secure the long-term prosperity of the Bura Irrigation Scheme.

Today, the team that participated in the just concluded 2026 Mombasa International Show, led by the Ag.Director of Irrigation Management Services, Eng. Jairus Serede, made a presentation to the CEO, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, highlighting NIA’s participation and achievements at the show.

Thereafter, the team presented a trophy to the CEO awarded to the Authority as the Best Agro-Processing Stand.

The Authority partnered with Tana River Sugar Company Limited and Tulma Global, who showcased their production activities,which contributed highly to NIA’s win.

NIA continues to showcase the impact of irrigation while promoting climate-smart agriculture, value addition, partnerships and food security.

On day two, which marked the official opening of the Mombasa International Show, the Authority, led by the Ag. Director of Irrigation Management Services, Eng. Jairus Serede on behalf of the CEO, hosted the day's Chief Guest Hon. Sen. Mutahi Kagwe, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, at our stand. He was accompanied by Hon. David Ernest Silinde, Tanzania's Deputy Minister for Agriculture.

The CS was taken through the various irrigation activities showcased at the stand to promote climate smart agriculture and trade initiatives for sustainable economic growth. He also interacted with our partners, staff and farmers.

Later, in his speech during the official opening ceremony, Hon. Sen. Kagwe urged Kenyans to pursue evidence based agriculture as they advance the 'From Farm to Port' agenda, this enhancing grain quality production and food security.

He concluded by presenting a trophy to the Authority for emerging No. 1 as the Best Agro-Processing Stand. NIA continues to showcase the impact of our various irrigation projects across the country.

Today H.E. Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD., CGH. President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-In-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces commissioned Rombo Clusters (Kisioki) Irrigation Development Project in Rombo Ward, Kajiado South Constituency, Kajiado County.

He was received by the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, Principal Secretary State Department for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho CBS, the Authority’s Chairman of the Board, Eng. Gilbert Maluki, the Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, NIA Board members, Management, local leaders and other senior government officials.

The project, drawing water from permanent springs including the Oljoro springs will irrigate a total of 5,500 acres across the Kisioki, Matepes, Esosioni and Oltepesi irrigation schemes.

With an estimated gross income of KES 1 billion from high-value horticultural crops, staple food crops, fruit trees, and livestock production, the project is set to create 6,000 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs, significantly boosting local employment and food security.

The financial and economic analysis confirms the project's viability, with a payback period of less than one year. Phase 2 will put an additional 5,000 acres under irrigation, reinforcing the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Key infrastructure includes extensive intake works, auxiliary structures and over 19.8 km of lined main and branch canals ensuring efficient water delivery.

Works on the Kisioki and Oltepesi schemes are 100% complete, with Esosioni at 99.5% and Matepes at 95%, targeting full completion by October 2026. Next steps include strengthening the capacity of the Irrigation Water Users Association (IWUA), providing quality input support, enhancing post-harvest handling facilities and rolling out Phase 2 to maximize the project’s economic impact.

This project underscores Kenya’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, wealth creation and food security as espoused in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The Authority also received yesterday's judging results scoring No.1 as the best agro-processing stand and No.2 as the best seed producing and marketing stand (Government).

The Authority is partnering with Tana River Sugar Company Limited and Tulma Global in the exhibitions where they are showcasing their production activities.

National Irrigation Authority is participating in the 2026 Mombasa International Show, taking place from September 2 to 6, 2026 at Jomo Kenyatta Showground, Mkomani, Mombasa. This year’s Agricultural Society of Kenya theme is “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth”

Today was "Judging of Exhibitions day" where the Authority was judged in eight( 8) classes as the best stand that; interprets current show theme; agriculture based, seed producing and marketing stand, agro-processing stand, organization that supports/promotes community projects/services, Innovation and Invention stand, youth activities, empowerments ad capacity building and in research and development stand; non-educational.

Gates open to the public tomorrow September 2, 2026 during the County Patrons and Livestock Day.

Perkerra Irrigation Scheme conducted election for Irrigation Water Users’ Association (IWUA) Leaders today.

A total of 17 Block Leader positions were available across the scheme. Elections were conducted through secret ballot for 14 positions, while the other three (3) positions had candidates who were unopposed.

For the Feeder Leaders, a total of 54 positions were due for elections. The R5C/RFD feeder line conducted its elections successfully, while the other 53 Feeder Leader positions had candidates who were unopposed.

The five (5) members of the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) and the IWUA Chairperson were also unopposed, and therefore no elections were conducted for these positions.

The elections were conducted in an open, transparent and participatory manner, giving farmers an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to choose their representatives. The process reinforces democratic participation and establishes leadership that will support accountable and sustainable irrigation water management within Perkerra Irrigation Scheme.

At the World Water Week 2026 side event in Stockholm, Sweden, the keynote address highlighted the role of the Water Availability and Demand (WAD) Tool in advancing data-driven irrigation and water resources management.

On behalf of the Cabinet Secretary, the Irrigation Secretary Mr. Joel Tanui, highlighted Kenya’s significant potential for irrigation development and emphasized the need to capitalize on reliable data, technology and digital tools to strengthen planning, investment and water resources management. He underscored Kenya’s agenda of expanding irrigation and water storage, noting that reliable data is critical for guiding investment decisions, supporting evidence-based irrigation designs, improving water management and enhancing climate resilience.

The Irrigation Secretary highlighted the WAD Tool as an important digital innovation that provides a critical link between water data, policy, planning and investment. The tool enables decision-makers to better understand water availability and demand and translate this information into practical interventions for sustainable irrigation development.

The National Irrigation Authority (NIA), represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Charles Muasya and Ag. Director Irrigation Management Services Eng. Jairus Serede participated as a panelists alongside the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI).

During the panel discussion, the NIA Chief Executive Officer applauded IWMI and FAO for their collaborative efforts in the co-development of the WAD Tool and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, knowledge sharing and additional capacity building to strengthen its application and institutional uptake.

The session concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to invest in the continued development, refinement and application of the WAD Tool to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable water management.

As Kenya expands its irrigation and water storage capacity, the commitment remains clear, to transform water data into actionable knowledge, translate knowledge into sound policy and convert policy into strategic investments that improve livelihoods, strengthen food security, enhance climate resilience and deliver sustainable water systems.
