🕯️ ROSEMARY KOECH’S DEATH: KENYA MOURNS KCB DATA PROTECTION EXECUTIVE
The death of Rosemary Chemutai Koech-Kimwatu, KCB Bank Group’s Head of Data Protection, has shocked Kenya’s banking, technology and digital-rights communities.
According to a report published by The Star, the 40-year-old executive was found dead at her Ngong home on 21 August 2026. The publication reported that a post-mortem examination conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor concluded that she died by su***de.
As discussions about Rosemary Koech’s death continue online, the public should avoid spreading rumours or presenting unverified claims as facts. Su***de is complex and should not be attributed to a single workplace, relationship, financial problem or individual without conclusive evidence.
Beyond the tragic headlines, Rosemary Koech was an accomplished lawyer, technology-policy expert and respected data protection professional in Kenya. She joined KCB Bank Group in 2022 after serving as Public Policy Manager at Safaricom and was later appointed Head of Data Protection.
Rosemary also served as a KICTANet Board Trustee and contributed to the advancement of:
✅ Data privacy and protection
✅ Internet governance
✅ Technology policy
✅ Digital rights in Kenya
✅ Responsible use of personal information
KICTANet described her as a valued mentor, colleague and friend whose work influenced technology policy across the region. The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner also remembered her as a trusted voice and committed privacy advocate.
Most importantly, Rosemary was a mother of four. Her children and family deserve privacy, compassion and protection from harmful online speculation during this difficult period.
Her death raises an important national conversation about mental health in the workplace. A successful career, impressive title or confident public image does not always reveal what someone may be experiencing privately.
Let us check on our colleagues, relatives and friends—not merely by asking, “Are you okay?” but by creating a safe space in which they can answer honestly.
What should Kenyan employers do to strengthen mental-health support for their employees?
May Rosemary Chemutai Koech-Kimwatu be remembered for her professional excellence, mentorship and contribution to Kenya’s digital transformation.
Rest in peace, Rosemary. 🕊️
