An observation on early marriages, bride price and African marital traditions.
Since time immemorial, women were often seen as a prized possession of the family. They were the crown jewel and a symbol of the family's wealth.
When they were being married off, elders from both families would enter negotiations to determine her worth. It was therefore imperative to raise her in a manner that would add to her value, lest she be considered worth a lower bride price.
It was also widely believed that the younger she was, the more valuable she became. Suitors were often encouraged by the girl's family from as early as the age of 12.
This project revisits, remembers and observes how these traditions continue to emerge, from time to time, even today.
