Melon Rouge Agency

Melon Rouge Agency Melon Rouge Agency (MRA) is a transdisciplinary creative agency working across research, strategy, and design since 2008.

Our projects in the social and cultural fields carry purpose and drive positive change. Our expertise stems from two complementary fields for the Global South:
โ€ข Creating and designing innovative cultural experiences โ€” museums, exhibitions, digital platforms, and interactive environments.
โ€ข Conceiving and developing social impact and behavior change communication (SBCC) strategies for UN agencies, NGOs, and government partners.

Think design is just about aesthetics? Think again.

What you see at the end is only the surface. Behind every exhibition, campaign, interface, or brand lies a series of decisions about people, systems, and competing priorities.

Design is a process of weighing perspectives, negotiating constraints, and shaping solutions with the people it is meant to serve. It is how complex ideas become clear, how stories get framed, and how what is promised aligns with what is actually delivered. What appears polished is often the result of honest reflections, dialogues, and continuous refinements.

Last month, we had these conversations with the next generation of designers from PPUA - Phnom Penh University of the Arts during their study tour at MRA.

What's your take on design?

If you had the chance to redesign your city, what would it look like?

Many of our projects at MRA already shape how people experience spaces, systems, and culture. But from time to time, we initiate explorations outside of any brief to push our thinking further. This is one of them: ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ข ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ญ ๐˜๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ.

As designers, we do not just respond to change. We help frame it. So we brought this question to PPUA students, exploring how cities might evolve, what everyday life could look like, and what it means to have agency in building the places we live in.

A future that works for people does not happen by chance. It is imagined, debated, and intentionally shaped.

If the future of cities is the kind of work you are doing or thinking about, let's connect.

A few weeks ago, part of our team travelled to Vientiane to continue our work in heritage and museum design. During the visit, we met with long-standing partners and new cultural actors to discuss ongoing collaborations and explore future projects across Laos.

A highlight of the trip: the kick-off of a new museography study for the iconic Ho Phrakeo โ€” a landmark of Lao heritage and Buddhist art (more about this soon).

We also identify local suppliers and fabricators who can help bring high-quality scenography to life in the country, an important step toward building projects rooted in local expertise.

We are still looking to broaden this network and would welcome any recommendations or introductions; weโ€™d be happy to connect. ๐Ÿ“ฉ

This new branding reflects the festivalโ€™s intention to celebrate the friendship, respect, and cultural exchange between Japan and Cambodia.

Within this logic, the hummingbird, taken directly from the festivalโ€™s original logo, remains the constant anchor of the JFF identity, a familiar figure that audiences can recognize instantly. Around this stable element, the Cambodian component becomes the evolving creative signature of each edition. Some years it may bring softness or beauty inspired by Apsaras or classical motifs; other years it introduces playfulness, humor, or contemporary reinterpretations of local forms.

At SOSORO, when curators and designers become visitors of Into the Light ๐Ÿ”Ž

Experiencing the exhibition as visitors helped us step back from the work we created, and understand it as a whole. Our transdisciplinary teamโ€”from curators to graphic and motion designers to creative writers, interactive designers and videographersโ€”got a better grasp on how smaller scopes add up to a bigger experience.

The exhibition brings together archival photographs, manuscripts, historical accounts and Jฤtaka scenes to trace the journey of the Silver Pagodaโ€™s lost vihara murals at the Royal Palace โ€” from their creation to their disappearance and their rediscovery through fragile glass-plate negatives. Moving through the space revealed how our research, writing, translation, design, motion, sound and interaction intertwined to shape the narrative.

Thank you to the SOSORO team and Blaise Kilian for working closely with us throughout.

If youโ€™re exploring ways to communicate culture with clarity and depth, please drop us a line ๐Ÿ“ฉ

Our โ€˜USAID Conserve Formative Research on Bushmeat Consumption Reductionโ€™ was shortlisted and presented at the 2025 Wild Animal Rescue Network (WARN ASIA) Conference โ€” a key regional forum on wildlife rescue and conservation.

The USAID Stop-Work Order hasnโ€™t halted our effort in bringing this research forward. Itโ€™s not about producing just another campaign. What drives us is the opportunity to create change and support lasting social impact in Cambodia.

Our Strategic Development Lead, ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ญ๐š ๐‚๐ก๐ž๐ค, shared the research findings that uncover the drivers of bushmeat consumption and where Social Behaviour Change Intervention is crucial in reducing the demand.

Nearly 100 participants from 20 countries joined this yearโ€™s edition, hosted by Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), with discussions spanning rehabilitation, enforcement, community engagement, and the coordination required for durable conservation outcomes.

If youโ€™re exploring research-driven ways to strengthen conservation outcomes, letโ€™s connect.
