Window of Opportunity

Opportunities do not always seem to wait for us like doors standing wide open. More often, they are like tiny windows that quietly open for a brief moment, only to close again while we hesitate.

That is why I believe what we need most to recognize and seize an opportunity is not extraordinary luck, but the insight to notice a small open window-and the courage to act when we find ourselves standing before it.

When new technologies emerge, when customers express needs different from those of the past, or when we begin to feel uncomfortable with familiar ways of working, we encounter signals of change. While these signals may not provide perfect answers right away, they often become small windows through which we can glimpse new possibilities.

Of course, we cannot seize every opportunity. What matters is discerning which opportunities are meaningful to us and, once we have made a choice, acting as swiftly as possible. If we wait until everything is perfectly in place before taking the first step, the window of opportunity will often have already closed. I firmly believe that opportunities lead to meaningful results when we begin with even the smallest attempt, learn through action, and build upon one another’s experiences.

What windows are open before SALTMiNE today?

For some of us, it may be a new customer. For others, it may be an unresolved problem, an emerging technology, or even a single remark from a colleague. I hope we will look beyond what is familiar and discover the possibilities waiting there.

기회의 창문

기회는 늘 활짝 열린 문처럼 우리를 기다리지 않는 것 같습니다. 오히려 아주 조그마한 창문처럼 어느 순간 조용히 열렸다가, 우리가 망설이는 사이 다시 닫히고 맙니다.

그래서 기회를 마주하고 그 기회를 잡는데 가장 필요한 것은 특별한 행운이 아니라, 열려 있는 작은 창문을 알아보는 눈과 그 앞에서 움직이는 용기라고 생각합니다.

새로운 기술이 등장할 때, 고객이 이전과 다른 요구를 말할 때, 익숙한 업무 방식에 불편함을 느낄 때 우리는 변화의 신호와 마주하게 됩니다. 물론 그것들이 당장 완벽한 답을 주지는 않지만, 새로운 가능성을 보여 주는 작은 창문이 될 경우가 많습니다.

물론 모든 기회를 붙잡을 수는 없습니다. 중요한 것은 우리에게 의미 있는 기회가 무엇인지 판단하고, 선택했다면 최대한 신속하게 행동하는 것일 것입니다. 완벽하게 준비된 뒤 출발하려 하면 그 기회의 창문은 이미 닫혀 버리기가 부지기수입니다. 작은 시도라도 먼저 시작하고 실행하면서 배우며 서로의 경험을 더할 때 기회는 비로소 의미있는 성과로 이어진다고 확신합니다.

지금 우리 소금광산 앞에는 어떤 창문이 열려 있을까요?

누군가에게는 새로운 고객일 수 있고 또 누군가에게는 해결되지 않은 문제나 새로운 기술 또는 동료가 건넨 한마디일 수 있습니다. 저는 우리가 익숙함 너머를 바라보며 그 가능성을 발견했으면 합니다.

May, with its deepening green, is already drawing to a close. In this month's SALTter, I'd like to bring up a slightly unfamiliar topic: "grumbling".

As we all know, May is Family Month, making "gratitude" a very common theme around this time. In reality, however, our lives aren't always filled with just gratitude. Sometimes, things don't go the way we hope, and our feelings go unnoticed. These disappointments can pile up, suddenly bursting out as complaints, discomfort, and resentment.

Where does this resentment come from?
I believe it fundamentally stems from "expectations." When our hope that things will go our way, that others will read our minds, or that things will simply go smoothly falls apart, we start to grumble. While this is a completely natural emotion, letting it linger in our hearts for too long can end up eating away at us from the inside.

There is a saying: "Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die." Just like salt prevents food from spoiling and enhances its flavor, what can we do to stop resentment from spoiling our inner selves?

I would like to suggest three things:

First, acknowledge your feelings. Validate yourself by saying, "I am feeling disappointed and angry right now," and accept your emotions exactly as they are.

Second, adjust your expectations. We need to practice letting go by realistically accepting that other people and situations won't always align with our own thoughts.

Third, express yourself honestly. Instead of grumbling on the inside, try communicating your needs and feelings outwardly in a polite and clear manner.

Feeling resentful isn't wrong in itself, and in this imperfect world, we can never eliminate it entirely. But for now, how about taking a quiet look at the grumbles inside us, gently brushing them off, and using salt-like wisdom to fully protect our hearts?

원망

어느덧 푸르름이 짙어지는 5월이 거의 지나고 있습니다. 이번 소금편지에서는 조금 낯선 주제를 꺼내보려고 하는데, 그것은 바로 ‘원망’입니다.

우리 모두가 알다시피 5월은 가정의 달이고, 그렇기에 5월에는 ‘감사’가 흔한(?) 시기라고 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 냉정하게도 우리의 현실에서는 늘 감사로만 가득한 것은 아닙니다. 때로는 내 마음처럼 따라 주지 않는 상황과 아무도 알아 주지 않는 서운함으로 인해, 우리 마음 속에는 누군가에 대한 서운함이 쌓여서 투정과 불편 그리고 원망으로 불쑥 튀어나오곤 합니다.

과연 원망은 어디에서 올까요?
저는 원망이 본질적으로는 기대감에서 출발한다고 생각합니다. 상황이 내 마음대로 되길 바라거나 상대가 내 마음을 미리 알아 주길 바라는 기대, 그리고 일이 순조롭게 풀리길 바라는 기대가 어긋날 때 우리는 원망을 하게 됩니다. 물론 이런 모습은 지극히 자연스러운 감정이지만, 우리 마음 속에 오래 머물게 놔두면 스스로를 갉아먹는 감정이 될 수가 있습니다.

‘원망을 마음에 품는 것은 상대방이 죽기를 바라며 자신이 독약을 마시는 것과 같다.’는 말이 있습니다. 음식의 부패를 막고 맛을 내는 소금처럼, 우리 마음 속에 원망이 우리 내면을 상하게 하지 않게 내버려 두지 않으려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?

저는 다음 세 가지를 제안해보고 싶습니다.
첫째는 ‘내가 지금 서운하고 화가 났구나.’하고 내 감정을 있는 그대로 타당하게 여겨 주며 감정을 인정하는 것입니다.
두 번째는 다른 사람이나 상황이 내 마음과 같을 수 없다는 것을 현실적으로 인정하고 내려놓는 연습을 통해 기대치를 조절해야 합니다.
끝으로 세 번째는 마음 속으로 투털거리기보다는 정중하고 명확하게 나의 필요와 감정을 밖으로 전달하면서 솔직하게 표현하는 것입니다.

원망하는 마음이 생기는 것 자체는 잘못이 아니고 완벽하지 않은 세상 속에서 원망을 완전히 없앨 수는 없겠지만, 내 안의 원망을 가만히 들여다보고 그것을 잘 털어내어 내 마음을 온전히 지키는 소금과 같은 지혜를 발휘해보는 것은 어떨까요?

FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out

How often do you check your social media? And what goes through your mind as you scroll through the glimpses of other people’s lives? Do you ever find yourself comparing your reality to their curated highlights, feeling discouraged or noticing a dip in your self-esteem?

This phenomenon is commonly known as FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). Simply put, it is a sense of vague anxiety that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent. It often manifests in our daily lives through:

The nagging feeling that you’re losing out because you aren't investing in stocks or crypto like everyone else.
The sense of being left behind if you don't have photos from the latest trending challenges or "must-visit" restaurants.
The habit of checking group chats incessantly for fear of missing a single conversation.

Rather than being a rare condition affecting only a few, FOMO has become a chronic ailment for many of us living in the modern world.

We see this not only in our personal lives but also within our workplaces and industries. It’s common to hear people say they only feel at ease when they belong to a certain startup association or are part of exclusive "CEO circles" and networking groups.

Strictly speaking, however, these feelings often originate from within. It’s no exaggeration to say that FOMO stems from a lack of self-confidence or dissatisfaction with our own current work and progress.

If the noise of the world becomes so loud that you can no longer hear your own heart, it is perfectly okay to close the door for a while. You are not missing out on anything. You are doing your best, living your own unique life, and performing your tasks with unwavering focus and excellence.

I hope that for every "MiNER" in the SALTMiNE, life becomes less about the Fear of Missing Out and more about JOMO—the Joy of Missing Out.,

소외공포증후군(FOMO)

여러분은 SNS을 얼마나 자주 하시나요? 그리고 SNS을 하면서 타인의 삶의 모습을 보며 어떤 생각을 하시나요? 혹시 SNS 속 타인의 일상과 내 자신의 모습을 비교하며 속상해하거나 자존감이 떨어져 있진 않으신가요?

흔히들 이런 현상을 FOMO(Fear Out Missing Out) 즉 소외공포증후군이라고 합니다. 다시 말해 자신만 흐름을 놓치고 있거나, 소외되고 있다는 막연한 불안감을 느끼는 증상을 말합니다. 이러한 증상은 다음과 같은 단면을 가지고 있습니다.
- 남들은 다 하는 주식이나 코인 투자를 나만 안 해서 손해 보는 것 같은 기분
- 유행하는 챌린지나 맛집 방문 인증샷이 없으면 소외된 것 같은 느낌
- 단톡방의 대화를 놓칠까 봐 수시로 스마트폰을 확인하는 습관

소외공포증후군은 어쩌면 멀리 떨어져 있는 어느 누군가의 질병이라기보다 현재를 살아가고 있는 우리 중 대다수의 고질병이라 할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

이러한 증상은 일반적인 개인 뿐만 아니라 우리가 일하는 직장 그리고 산업 가운데에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 어느 스타트업 협회에 들어가 있거나 어느 어느 대표들 그룹이나 모임에 들어가 있어야 마음이 놓인다는 얘기들을 심심치 않게 들을 수 있기 때문입니다.

하지만 사실 엄밀히 말해서 이러한 증상은 ‘내 자신으로부터 비롯된다’고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 스스로에게 자신이 없어서, 또는 내가 하고 있는 일과 업무에 만족하지 못 해서 생기는 모습이라고 해도 과언이 아닙니다.

광부 여러분! 세상의 소음이 너무 커서 내 마음의 소리가 들리지 않는다면, 잠시 문을 닫아도 괜찮습니다. 여러분은 아무것도 놓치고 있지 않습니다. 여러분만의 삶을 최선을 다해 잘 살고 있으며, 여러분이 맡으신 일들에 대해서 흔들리지 않고 집중해서 탁월하게 해내고 있습니다!

Relational Poverty

Humanity is currently living in the most 'connected era' in history. Social media timelines are awake 24/7, and our contact lists hold hundreds, if not thousands, of names.

Paradoxically, however, it is all too common to see people around us experiencing a deeper sense of isolation than ever before. We live in a reality where our social media feeds overflow with 'likes,' yet there is no one who genuinely asks how our hearts are doing. This is the raw reality of the 'relational poverty' we face amidst an abundance of connections.

It might seem like a slight detour, but the world of Big Data, which chases only massive trends, views an individual merely as a single dot or a number. Buried under averages and majority preferences, the unique color of 'me' is fading away.

Relational poverty begins right here. It stems from a profound lack of understanding—not knowing what kind of music sets the mood for me in a certain situation, or what kind of coffee I crave on a rainy day.

At SALTMiNE, we believe. We believe that the key to resolving this relational poverty lies not in something grand, but in the very small, seemingly trivial 'Small Data.'

What we aim to mine is not just simple information. It is to discover the unique data of an individual—that salt-like value—hidden within the desolate sea of data, and to connect it to the world in the warmest way possible. We are determined to prove that when someone remembers our trivial habits and respects our tastes, we finally cease to be mere numbers or statistics and become true 'beings.'

Now, as more than half of February has already slipped by, we hope that rather than numerous shallow encounters, you are accompanied by deep connections that truly listen to your quiet voice.

관계적 가난

현재 인류는 역사상 가장 잘 ‘연결된 시대’를 살고 있습니다. SNS 타임라인은 24시간 깨어 있고, 연락처에는 수백, 수천 명의 이름이 저장되어 있습니다.

하지만 역설적이게도 우리 주변에는 그 어느 때보다 깊은 고립감을 느끼는 사람들을 흔하게 볼 수 있습니다. SNS에 ‘좋아요’는 넘쳐나지만, 정작 내 마음의 안부를 물어주는 사람은 없는 현실. 이것이 바로 우리가 마주한 풍요한 관계 속에 있는 ‘관계적 가난’의 민낯입니다.

조금 다른 얘기처럼 느껴질 수도 있겠지만, 거대한 흐름만을 좇는 빅데이터의 세상은 개인을 하나의 점이나 숫자로만 바라봅니다. 평균과 다수의 취향에 묻혀 ‘나’라는 고유한 색깔은 희미해지고 있습니다.

관계적 가난은 바로 여기서 시작됩니다. 내가 어떤 상황에서 어떤 분위기의 음악을 좋아하는지, 비 오는 날엔 어떤 커피를 찾는지에 대한 이해가 부재하기 때문입니다.

소금광산은 믿습니다. 이 관계적 가난을 해결할 열쇠는 거창한 것이 아니라, 아주 작고 사소한 ‘스몰데이터’에 있다는 것을.

우리가 캐내고자 하는 것은 단순한 정보가 아닙니다. 삭막한 데이터의 바다 속에서 한 개인이 가진 고유의 데이터, 그 소금 같은 가치를 발견하고 세상과 가장 따뜻하게 연결하는 것입니다. 누군가 나의 사소한 습관을 기억해 주고 내 취향을 존중해 줄 때, 우리는 비로소 숫자나 수치가 아닌 ‘존재’가 될 수 있다는 것을 우리는 반드시 증명해낼 것입니다.
