$10k months, $3k months (its not always that glamorous when you're freelancing)

5 Years since I quit my office job and started fresh

"HELP - I'm losing it here!"

My client sent me a WhatsApp message this morning. She was writing a description for her new offer (she's a successful life coach) and felt lost.

She'd been spinning a lot of plates lately. And doing so well.

Recently sold her house, fully booked for her 1-1 coaching, sold out her upcoming retreat, 4 podcast episodes recording that week, and in the midst of creating a brand new program.

She was buzzing. But now, when it came to writing, her brain was mush.

The words weren't flowing.

Or rather, the words were flowing way too much?

She pasted her copy into WhatsApp. I took one look. Long complicated sentences. Rambly. Draggy. Confusing. I was frowning.

I usually enjoy reading her copy. This was not good.

"Simplify to amplify" I whispered to myself.

I blinked twice and started tapping on my phone.

We reduced her current copy from 4 lines (68 words) to 1 (19 words).

The result? Clear copy that was enjoyable to read and deeply impactful.

"Thanks, this is exactly what I needed", the next message came in.

"You're good!", my reply.

Because she WAS good. Let's be honest, this woman was doing it all. And writing good copy ain't easy. Take it from a copywriter who's been doing this for the past 3 years, day in, day out, with all kinds of businesses.

But, if you follow this simple rule, things do get a whole lot better:

"SIMPLIFY TO AMPLIFY"

Now, take the next 5 minutes and go to your website. Pick a small paragraph on your home page, your mission statement, or a description for one of your services.

Read it out loud.

Does it feel rambly, draggy, boring?

Rewrite it. Then go for a walk. Have some tea. Watch an episode of The Crown. Go back to it. Read it out loud.

Sounds off?

Rewrite it. Repeat. Chop off words. Rearrange them. Remove sentences completely. Start from scratch. Compare. Mix them up. Keep going until it feels good.

Then show it to a friend.

You good? You good.

Now, over the next few weeks, work your way through every web page. Your bio. Your emails. Anything that has your words on it.

Happy V day everyone!

Here's a pic we took during our travels in Ohrid last summer.

Since meeting Mark back in Canada nearly 4 years ago, we've been on a wild ride - quite literally.

I never thought I'd be traveling so much in such a short period of time. Yes, I was always obsessed with food travelers on tv, as rhey would travel the world and eat all kinds of foods and discover new cultures, traditions and people.

But I always thought that was the life for tv people, celebrities or high level biz people going on important biz trips...

Digital nomading was only something that Mark told me about and something he pushed me to let go of my fears and try for myself.

And I loved it...and I still love it ❤

Mark showed me a new way of life that never fit in my schoolgirl books and for that, V day would never be long enough to celebrate it 🍾

Some people come into you life and change it forever. I'm lucky it changed in a good way ☺

I'm grateful but also slightly anxious...

I had initially decided to go light in December in terms of work so I could focus on myself and some passion projects. Turns out, many projects in the pipeline ended up coming to life last week and BAM BAM BAM, now have one of my busiest months yet this December.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE what I do! And so pumped for the cool projects I'm about to work on!

And I'm grateful that I even have a pipeline - being a freelance copywriter and marketing coach during Covid has been a struggle. Same for any other job or business all around the world really! I live in constant fear of my business collapsing at some point...and I know this is a feeling that is shared by so many of us right now.

I am also SO SO grateful that my work life allows me to travel around the world and have so many adventures without needing to take an official "holiday"

But let me make a promise to myself today, January will be the month I unwind and let go of workaholism and mad ambition for a little while - it's my birthday month too so let me use that as an excuse haha

Side note, I am also about to go on 2 long bus rides to get from Sofia to Tirana since the flights were less than ideal, so I suppose that anxiety is being felt today on top of everything else :P

Zoning out on that Google doc, waiting for a boost of creativity to help you write your website copy?

Listen, if this just isn't your thing, it isn't.

Because THIS is what you are actually good at:

You are great a great leader.

You are great at serving your clients and ensuring that their needs are being met.

You are a great listener and are always improving your business based on the feedback you get.

You feel a shot of energy run through your entire body when a client tells you you made their day.

So, let's be kinder to ourselves, shall we?

Ok...This is when you close the Google doc and promise yourself you'll find some time to go over your website next week...or next month when things are lighter.

You say this, but deep down you know you are kidding yourself. Let's be honest, it's already been months now...wait, has it already been a year?!

Damn, time is just flying!

A sudden anxious feeling creeps into your gut, making its way up to your throat and behind your temples.

You feel slightly sick in the stomach, a dull pain starting in your head.

You slow your breath and focus, these panic attacks come from nowhere, and as a business owner, you've learned how to manage it and calm yourself down.

Now, I want you to read this next part intently. I want you to understand this and absorb it completely.

👉You do not have to do it all yourself.

👉You do not have to figure it all out by yourself.

👉You do not always have to know what to do.

You can find someone who understands, listens, and help you turn your vision into a reality.

A copywriter, a marketing strategist, a mix of nerdy and creative.

No, you don't need to be a straight-face, intimidating bitch to be paid your worth.

Not even remotely.

What you need is to find the right people - your ideal client. One that you can connect with so effortlessly over a call that you stole their heart from the moment you said "I actually have never seen Game of Thrones"

This is the power of niching down and becoming so good at your craft FOR A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE.

And when I say small, it's not small at all. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people in the niche your heart craves to focus on.

Helps that we work globally these days - no more excuse.

Yesterday I closed my biggest client project yet. 2 private chefs getting together to start a food brand together in Canada. And I have to tell ya, a lot of the conversation was about food!

Through drools and giggles, we sealed the deal. I will be their copywriter and content strategist for the next 2 months and help them create a unique brand voice that speaks to their audience, write content that highlights their authority online, and seduce Google to rank them at the top!

And if you know me at all, you'd know that I'm the bubbly, quirky, warm and slightly awkward - not the typical don't-mess-with-me bitch who closes high-ticket deals you were taught on Suits.

So, if you're a lil bit dorky, a lil but wild, a lil bit messy like me. If you smile way too much like me. Know that that does not have to be a disadvantage for you to be profitable and successful as a freelancer.

Know that you CAN be you and you can still slay that dragon.

COPY TIPS SERIES

Ok, I need to say this again:

You do not need to sound smart (when you write or when you speak) for people to know you're smart.

In fact, a smart person is capable of explaining something with such simplicity, a school kid could grasp it. Or even better, Joey Tribiani could grasp it!

So, next time you're public-speaking, write a post online, create a new page for your website or write a blog post, avoid overly long sentences or words that sound like they're only used in textbooks.

You're not giving a lecture here, you're building a connection.

That's what good copy is about.
