2021 trends - RETRO FUTURISM

Retro futurism, the sci-fi dreams of a bygone era, is appealing for the spectacular ways in which the past got it wrong. By now, we were expected to have flying cars, ray guns and robot maids. Instead, we have Roombas.

But through the ages, retro futurism as a visual style has prevailed due to its bold imagination with a surprisingly optimistic outlook — at least more so than our current visions of doom in shows like Black Mirror. The retro futurists believed in human progress, to the extent that even scary green martians in flying saucers would be no match for our scientific ingenuity.

Stylistically, this optimism finds its expression through an emphasis on bright colors, computer-inspired typography, and curves — from fishbowl space helmets to arches and domes.

Rather than returning us to an idealized past, 2021’s retro futurism promises to transport us back to the good old days of the days yet to come.

When PepsiCo first started work on their campaign they probably knew they were on to something special, but the final outcome must have exceeded even their greatest expectations. The result turned out to be something which genuinely rivals VW's iconic 'think small' campaign of the late 50's, sending tingles down the spines of even the most hardened creatives around the world.

The basic idea was quite simple - raising awareness to the fact that, in surveys, more people said they preferred Pepsi with their burger than its rival - but the ex*****on, from Miami-based agency Alma Ad was, well, just so spectacularly delivered. There it is! The ubiquitous Pepsi brand, right before our eyes, embedded in the packaging of each of the leading fast food restaurants. How did we ever miss that?

And the sweet, sweet irony that none of these restaurants even serve Pepsi just makes the whole thing even more exquisite! Well done everyone involved. PepsiCo .kaplan.545 https://www.adweek.com/creativity/pepsi-shares-the-story-behind-its-brilliant-burger-wrapper-ads/
