Coventry is a city in the east of the English county of West Midlands, forms a special district with the status of the City of Coventry.
It is known for its factory industry, especially hat factories; there are also factories of watches, bicycles, sewing machines, carpets, ribbons, lace, etc. Coventry is the headquarters of Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. ("Jaguar Land Rover"), representing the Jaguar and Land Rover car brands.
Coventry used to be surrounded by high walls with twelve gates; it was distinguished by its solemn processions. It is mentioned in Tennyson's poem "Lady Godiva", in honor of which celebrations are still held 3 times a year. In the city there is the Cathedral of St. Michael in a light Gothic style, destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt, as well as the Cathedral of St. Mary of the time of Henry VI.
Coventry is the 9th most populous city in England and the 11th in the UK. It is also the 2nd largest in terms of population after Birmingham in the county, although Nottingham and Leicester are larger in area.
The city is located 153 kilometers (95 miles) northwest of London and 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of Birmingham, of all the cities in the county it is the furthest from the coast. Although Coventry is a city with a fairly large population, it is not included in the list of major cities in the UK, as it is located in close proximity to Birmingham.
Coventry is the hometown of poet Philip Larkin and actor Clive Owen, as well as the drummer of the American Christian rock band Skillet Jen Ledger.
