Macchiato was first prepared in Italy in the 1980s. Some coffee shop patrons ordered espresso with a little milk for lunch. To avoid confusion between coffee drinks, baristas “marked” espresso with milk with a drop of milk foam - this is how they came up with the name macchiato.

Americano gets its name from the drink American soldiers drank in Italy during World War II. Traditional Italian espresso proved too strong for soldiers accustomed to milder American coffee. By diluting the espresso with water, they felt the taste of home. This is how Americano was born!
