We're all safe, as none of us was at the agency at the time of the blast. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends, and all the Beirutis affected by this crime.

Over the past 27 years, we gave the country way more than we received from it, while you didn't give the country anything meaningful and took from it all of its resources and wealth, leaving us with a co**se. Disappear.

(all others, including , are not an omission, just not worth the mention)

“Design, as an activity, has social meaning and I always say that the starting point to this is the Hippocratic oath ‘Do no harm.’ The idea that design has impact on society –and that impact can be beneficial– is much more significant to me than design as a selling tool. And I’m hoping that that idea about what the primary role of design is in culture prevails and that, if I had a legacy, that would be the legacy that I would hope would continue.”

In 1994, designed this CD (it’s a coaster in a CD case) with a booklet that tells the story of the pub/club B018, opening in Sinn el Fil. It was almost the first club I went to, many times after drinks with and at Abou Elie (with ). I was underage hanging out with the older ones, and Beirut was coming out of the war. It was seen as a very underground place (alcohol, g**s and drugs they said), and the Beirut that surrounded us at the time was not. The inside walls were filled with wooden panels, the kind we find in old damascene palaces, on which were written in golden arabic calligraphy, the names of artists one could hear there (from Miles Davis to Linton Kwesi Johnson, who -I discovered much later- had studied where I later did my masters: Goldmisths). These wooden panels were then used as the decoration of Sheikh Manqoush, a nice cheap brunch place where Doculand Bliss is now. I think .nawfal was playing at B018 then and I didn’t know him yet, or is this where we met? and I spent some mad nights dancing there alone or with strangers. The last page of this booklet stayed, for years, the base on which I built my musical taste. This item I have preserved with lots of care. And for those who were at B018 during those years, it was something (I have such clear memories there or in its successor Orange Mecanique with Nesrine Mounira Tania Mayssa Eddie Christine Rafic Marwan Ernesto Michel Khaled Rayya Naji Asmara Christophe Fares Alia and more). @ Sin el Fil - Beirut, Lebanon

Challenge accepted
The opportunity to share an image of a mountain house designed by architect Maurice Hindié (1927–2014) in the early 1970s. A typical modernist design, from modularity and the problem-solving contemplation of building on a slope, to the precast concrete structure and sandwich panels facade (now gone).
I have sharp childhood memories playing around it and visiting its striking interior.
The picture was taken in 1972 (the year it was built) or 1973 by young father, fresh-graduate architect, and instructor of my early design education Pierre Bassil (1946–2018).

We hope everyone is keeping safe during these challenging times, and staying indoors as much as possible except when absolutely necessary.

Since our doors are closed, we invite you to virtually visit one of our recent exhibitions, "Baalbek, Archives of an Eternity," safely from your home (link in bio). Presented last summer in the Special Exhibitions Hall, the exhibition brings together archaeological, ethnographic, anthropological, cultural, and artistic perspectives to unpack the history of Baablbek from its origins to the contemporary moment.

Curated by Vali Mahlouji, "Baalbek, Archives of an Eternity" was organized with the support of Association Philippe Jabre and in collaboration with the Baalbek International Festival and the Directorate General of Antiquities, Ministry of Culture. This virtual tour was developed by Paravision.

The 2020 edition of Al Bustan International Festival of Music and the Performing Arts opens tonight with pianist Gloria Campaner and the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gianluca Marcianò, playing Beethoven’s Symphony Nº 5 and Piano Concerto Nº 5: The Emperor.
In 2018, we redesigned the identity of the festival and, from then on, have been collaborating with wonderful people to develop the communication material of every edition. This year’s edition is taking place in the most trying times Lebanon has ever experienced. As an act of solidarity in such a difficult situation and unprecedented financial crisis, the festival has priced all tickets at 30,000 LBP.
As a non profit association which receives no funding from the government, Al Bustan Festival is also celebrating the efforts of the civil society by featuring in its catalogue nearly 25 fellow non-profit organizations who do invaluable work and have been striving, some for decades, for a better Lebanon:

Vaughan Oliver has passed away, leaving behind the exquisitely crafted album covers he designed for 4AD Records artists Pixies, Cocteau Twins, Colourbox, Dead Can Dance, The Breeders, The Birthday Party, Lush, This Mortal Coil, Throwing Muses, Ultra Vivid Scene, and many more.
Rarely have album art and music been so consistently evocative of each other.
