To make the most powerful sustainable impacts, it’s one thing to have a great idea. But it’s another to tactfully attract people to it. ☘️
Let’s dive into 4 sustainability marketing examples that remain etched in people’s minds.
1. Return, reuse, and repeat - The Body Shop 💄
The campaign by The Body Shop started in Indonesia to encourage customers to return empty products. Partnering with TerraCycle, they installed recycling bins in stores worldwide, offering discount vouchers in return. Despite its global reach, The Body Shop stays focused on building trust and empowering customers to share their stories.
2. Feeding bees in autumn - A1 Telekom 🐝
Ahead of World Bee Day 2018, A1 Telekom highlighted how global warming affects urban flowering. They built an urban garden in Slovenia, blending OOH ads with social media to raise awareness. In a week, 3,500 bee-friendly plants were grown, and visitors adopted plants to create home bee oases, helping bees survive into autumn. This shows any brand can drive strong engagement with a sustainable message.
3. The disappearance of the crocodile - Lacoste 🐊
The global apparel brand supported species conservation through a three-year partnership with IUCN’s Save Our Species initiative. They launched limited-edition polo shirts replacing their iconic crocodile logo with 10 endangered species, producing shirts equal to each species’ remaining population. Proceeds went directly to preservation efforts — a smart example of cause marketing as part of modern brand strategy.
4. Plastic fishing - Corona 🐠
Corona’s Plastic Fishing Tournament reinforced its environmental commitment by paying anglers to fish plastic from the sea. In just a few hours, 80 fishermen removed over 3 tonnes of plastic from the Pacific. The event combined BTL and cause marketing to boost awareness and brand impact.
